The game started quietly with neither side looking fluent on the ball. Fabian Yantorno was first to threaten with a run in to the box which was thwarted by Shanks1965. Domcassells showed his tenacious side a minute later, battling against two defenders to earn United a corner which came to nothing.
First blood was drawn by Gretna shortly afterwards, and it wasn’t a goal Mff United will want to see again. gbnine put Jonesy under pressure with a pass back which the goalkeeper controlled, but was unable to clear before he was closed down by Yantorno, the striker toeing the ball away from him and tappping into the empty net.
Yantorno had given Gretna an early tonic, but Mff United reaction was a positive one. Domcassells was fouled during a surging run midway through the half, but to the striker’s frustration, the referee ruled that the offence was just outside the penalty area. Artetas Gem struck the resultant free kick powerfully, but the ball deflected off the defensive wall and away from danger.
MFF United drew level five minutes later. gbnine picked up the ball on the right flank, and as he checked inside, he ignored the easy option of a square pass to Yiddo, and instead put in an inviting left foot cross. Artetas Gem lost his marker, and glanced a header into the bottom corner.
From the restart, the hard working Artetas Gem immediately won the ball back and – with his confidence sky high – tried his luck from long range but couldn’t keep the shot on target. gunner_girl91 followed suit a minute later, but again the effort was wayward.
Gretna looked to be wobbling at the back, and Trialist(43) put in a dangerous cross in 33 minutes which Domcassells got his head to. gunner_girl91 couldn’t capitalise on the loose ball, but it fell for Yiddo who put the shot over the bar on the stretch from twelve yards.
With five minutes of the first half remaining, Shanks1965 embarked on a mazy run into the Gretna half. After exchanging passes with Yiddo, he unleashed a shot which was deflected into the path of Domcassells. The shot was parried nervously by Fleming, but gunner_girl91 couldn’t find the target with the rebound.
Just as everyone was looking for MFF United to go in front before the break, however, Gretna pitched in with the sucker punch. From a Meynell throw in, Makinwa touched the ball to Skelton, who crossed to the far post. Yantorno was always favourite to win the header above the challenge of Trialist, and as the ball went across the face of goal, Nicky Deverdics was the one who reacted to turn the ball into the net and score his first goal of the season.
Half Time: Mff United 1-2 Gretna
In a strange development, Gretna’s side came back out over five minutes before the restart, where the proceeded to do a full warm up training routine. The Stand in Manager followed up with some stern coaching particularly to his defenders, whom he seemed to be psyching up for the expected pressure to come.
The preparation seemed to pay dividends as Gretna pushed forward in the first couple of minutes of the second half, but thereafter the visitors were content to set up camp in their own half and look to frustrate Mff United and try to run the clock down.
A succession of niggly free kicks were conceded by Gretna, which served to disrupt MFF United’s flow. On the flip side, it did provide United with numerous opportunities to find quality delivery from set pieces, but all too often the delivery was lacking.
gbnine shot wide, before Greg Fleming was made to look highly uncertain underneath the bar as Yiddo put in an inswinging corner from the right. Fleming’s discomfort was never put any sustained pressure, however, as set piece after set piece was wasted.
Michael Tait then stepped in to take the full force of a Yiddo shot following a neat rehearsed move from a throw in which featured JimmyShimmy, gunner_girl91 and Yiddo.
JimmyShimmy brought on Trialist(63) and Trialist(41) for Trialist (51) and gbnine as Mff United looked for the creative spark to find a clear cut chance to equalise, and they almost did so with a quarter of an hour remaining.
Yiddo’s free kick was half cleared, where it fell to gunner_girl91 on the left. Put in a deep cross which Fleming spilled, with the ball dropping back to Yiddo. The Midfielder side stepped a defender but could only meekly pull his shot wide into the side netting.
Just as MFF United seemed to be getting up a head of steam, however, the impetus strangely deserted them as Gretna used every opportunity available to slow the game down.
At the death, a Yiddo free kick provided United with their final chance to equalise. JimmyShimmy was caught on his heels and couldn’t meet it, with the ball dropping through and narrowly wide of the target.
Full Time: MFF United 1-2 Gretna
Man of the Match: While none of the MFF United players played to their full potential this afternoon, the award goes to Yiddo who showed tenacity and a positive attitude after MFFUnited had fallen behind.
