Football as a symbol of british identity :)

Hello Guys...
my name is Anne and im from germany. Im a big fooball fan and thats why i now have to do a coursework about it in school....in english.
My teacher and i decided that my coursework has to have the title " Football as a symbol of british identity". That means i have to describe how football in England or Britain helps for example minorities, especially ethinic minorities, to integrate into society and how football makes england to what it is. (Because i know it is a big part of your culture just like it is here in germany)
And now i have some questions and i wanted to as if you could help me? Because it might be cool to talk to some english football fans and how they see football in their country.

thanks
Anne

Thanks for this warm welcome
okay then...here are my questions:

1. In what way do you think can football unite people in Britain?
2. Does it have a big influence on your life is it a part of your identity?
3. Do you think immigrants can get integrated better through football?

And my last questions has something to do with the english national team.

Why do you always sing your national anthem during a football match of the national team? (i mean not before the match but when it has aleady started)

Could the national anthem be seen as some kind of symbol of integration, because when i watch a match of the english national team i see everyone sing it. English people as well as asians and people of other ethnicities.

i hope you can understand my question

thank you!!!

I probably shouldn't answer these questions because I'm Welsh not English, but to be honest although football can unite communities in terms of unifying Britain, i've always found it to be more divisive. I have only got Rugby union to compare, but the fans there are never segregated - there's no need. Banter and passion exist, but never anything more sinister. Can't see why football can't be the same.

As for being part of my identity? No not really, only in the sense that It's a favourite passtime. I suppose the only other influence is the fact that as a woman I sometimes feel isolated as a fan.

Don't know about the immigrant thing. No personal experience, better off talking to someone from a large city for that.

Shouldn't comment at all on the English national team, only to say the National Anthem is shite. It's weak and irrelevant to most people in the country. It's about time they got a new one, something more rousing and passionate. I'd complain that technically its the British national anthem but frankly, they can keep it!

You should answer the questions as its about british football.

Anyway he's my answers:

1. In what way do you think can football unite people in Britain?

Football brings together people from all backgrounds and nationalities / religions. Its crazy as everyone are friends inside the ground and get on with one another, then they are friends outside the ground also. You have Muslims having a laugh with Christians and Non Believers. Away from relegion you have fans from Norway, USA and other places from around the world who make the odd trip to the Riverside. I think its great and its great for the local community also.

2. Does it have a big influence on your life is it a part of your identity?

Yes it does, when you are out talking to people, say on a night out in the town centre, football always gets discussed and you always ask who they support. I think that has a big affect on the way people look at you, well it does with me anyway, if I'm speaking to a person from Middlesbrough and they support Manchester United. I'm like, why? Then they tell me, and then I will judge them .

Also I have a big car sticker in the back window of my Clio 182 and it feels great driving around Portsmouth with than on show just to let people know who I support

3. Do you think immigrants can get integrated better through football?

I'm not sure about immigrants because they really can't afford to go to games so they don't really get integrated with the local community that way. To be honest I don't think they get integrated with the local community anyway, they just keep themselves to themselves, maybe it would be a good idea to get them involved with the club, give the club and the community something as we have given them food and shelter, well the local council has.

Why do you always sing your national anthem during a football match of the national team? (i mean not before the match but when it has already started)

Could the national anthem be seen as some kind of symbol of integration, because when i watch a match of the english national team i see everyone sing it. English people as well as asians and people of other ethnicities.

We sing it because we are proud to be English and we are proud of everything English. To see Asians and other ethnic minorities singing it is great. I honestly don't mind them coming over hear and sharing our values. What I don't like is the people coming over hear and trying to change the law, carrying out forces marriages etc, basically not living by our rules / laws.

Thanks
