Match Report :
First Half -
There was a blustery wind blowing at MFF Stadium and initially both teams struggled to settle. The first chance of the afternoon fell to Cork City but Healy blasted well over from the edge of the penalty area. Gamble and Healy then combined with the latter having his header cleared off the line from JimmyShimmy. The resulting corner was swung in by Gamble and JimmyShimmy was lucky to see the ball deflect off his head and onto the top of the crossbar and out for another corner. MFF United started to come back into the match and with 14 minutes on the clock they had a loud appeal for a penalty. Yiddo fired in an excellent cross to the danger area that struck JGareth Farrelly but despite loud appeals play was waved on. I_AM_CANADIAN was looking in the mood and when he and gbnine combined well it took an excellent tackle from Ryan to halt the Canadian at the edge of the penalty area. Cork's new signing Michael Devine was then called into action when firstly he tipped away a cross from Arteta's Gem and then saved well from a Yiddo shot from 20 yards out. Shanks1965 then went close to scoring but this time the goalkeeper managed to deal with his speculative cross. MFF'S United’s Centre Half then created an excellent chance for Yiddo but shot well wide. As ever Joe Gamble was the main danger for the visitors and just after the half hour mark Mooney and Kearney combined to set him up but Jonesy blocked his shot. Gamble took the corner himself which picked out Ryan at the back post but the young Irishman was unlucky to see his close range effort hit the outside of the post and out of danger for MFF United. Four minutes before the break Cork created the best chance of the afternoon so far when Joe Gamble broke broke down the left and squared to Healy who was standing unmarked in the penalty area. Fortunately for MFF United the nippy striker, took far too long and this allowed the MFF United defence to block his weak effort and clear to safety.
Half Time Summary: A poor half of football in which the visitors made the best chances. MFF United were playing into a strong wind in the first period and would be looking to change things in the second half when the teams swapped ends.
Second Half:
Four minutes after the restart the game sprung into life when firstly Colin O'Brien hit a thunderous shot from 25 yards out that struck the inside of the post and rolled along the MFF United goal line. MFF then broke straight up the park and there was a scramble in the Cork City box during which gunner_girl91 and I_AM_CANADIAN tried to fire in efforts before the visitors cleared. gbnine then created a great chance for Artetas Gem. He cut in from the left and set up his team mate who shot from the edge of the area. Devine managed to stop his effort but the ball spilled from his grasp and I_AM_CANADIAN rightly challenged for the ball but Devine was able to wrestle the ball from under his feet. With 56 minutes on the clock MFF United broke the deadlock. The ball was knocked up to Artetas Gem who flicked on to Domcassells who just managed to spring the offside trap. Domcassells was one on one with Devine and the MFF United forward calmly stroked the ball home giving the keeper no chance. Cork City looked to hit back and when O'Brien set up Ryan it took a fine save from jonesy to deny the Keeper. MFF United were then unlucky not to double their lead when Yiddo's brilliantly crossed to JimmyShimmy but MFF United’s new man flicked the ball over from a couple of yards out. With 65 minutes gone referee Iain Brines made his first booking of the afternoon when he cautioned United’s gbnine for a rash challenge. Three minutes later he made his second booking and unfortunately it was gbnine again for pulling the shirt of Joe Gamble and therefore he had no option but to send off the in form midfielder. In between these two bookings Yiddo for MFF United and Kearney for Cork City had decent efforts saved from the impressive goalkeepers. MFF United’s keeper was then again called into action when he parried an effort from Gamble. Despite being a man down MFF United continued to press and when the Cork City's defence stood back off Trialist(46) the Norwegian was only inches wide with a low drive from the edge of the area. Yiddo then sent in another dangerous cross that was flicked on by Shanks1965 but the ball was cleared off the line by Horgan. Eager to halt their poor run of defeats the Cork Manager made a double change with 15 minutes left when he replaced Ryan and O'Brien with David Meyler and Sean Kelly. The City then had a shout for a penalty when Gamble and JimmyShimmy clashed in the MFF United penalty box but quite correctly the referee allowed the game to run on. Domcassells had put in another fine shift and with 10 minutes left Trialist came on to replace him. Four minutes later the game was put beyond Cork City in exceptional circumstances. A clumsy challenge from Mooney on gunner_girl91 won MFF United a free kick 25 yards from goal. Yiddo stood up and curled in a tremendous right foot effort into the top right hand corner of the net. This sent the home support wild!. There was time for one last change for the visitors when their captain Liam Kearney came off with Allan O'Conner replacing him.
Summing Up: An excellent three points for United and a clean sheet for the impressive Jonesy. United were so much better in the second half and in the end ran out worthy winners.
Man of the match – I_AM_CANADIAN. He had a great second half and looked very dangerous on the left flank. A mention also to Yiddo whose brilliant effort ensured MFF'S first victory.
