Boro after Sidwell

Quote:
STEVEN SIDWELL would only contemplate a summer move to Boro if Chelsea decide to sell him, his agent told the Gazette today.

The versatile midfielder still has three years left to run on the deal he signed with the Blues last summer and isn’t prepared to go knocking on Avram Grant’s door demanding a transfer, despite failing to establish himself as a first team regular.

Boro tried to sign the 25-year-old from Reading two years ago and went as far as discussing terms but the Royals turned down the club’s bid and the former England Under-21 international opted to run down the final year of his contract.

At the time Gareth Southgate expressed his admiration for Sidwell and the Gazette understands the 25-year-old Londoner is once again on Boro’s list of summer targets.

“Steven is very happy at Chelsea,” said agent Eric Walters. “If Chelsea accept a bid for him then that will be a different matter and Steven would have to think about his future.

“I’m not saying he would welcome the offer or disregard it. If Middlesbrough made a bid and Chelsea accepted it then he would have to look at his options.

“His situation is he’s under contract to Chelsea for another three years and there hasn’t been any indication from the club that they want to sell him. Steven is happy to stay and fight for his place.”

Walters added: “It sometimes takes a year to bed in, especially when the manager who signs him moves on soon after his arrival.”

Sidwell has made 13 starts for Chelsea, coming off the bench on another 12 occasions.

His lack of regular action has meant he’s nowhere near to making the England squad less than a year after his impressive Premier League displays for Reading led to him being strongly tipped for a call up.

Sidwell would be an excellent signing. the midfield is where we need to strengthen in the summer. dont see why Chelsea would want to keep him.

Sidwell is a decent player. Don't be surprised to see other clubs come in for him.
