Our 66 Absent Friends. We forget them not.

Here's to the 66 Bears who each left their homes on January 2nd 1971 to travel to Ibrox in support of the Rangers but never returned home again.

I have spoken to friends that were at that game
supporting Celtic and Rangers they were unaware
that this disaster had taken place and went for a
few beers before going home while the family worried
about their safety. This may seem very difficult to
underestand now but tv was available only in certain
places, no mobile phones etc

The terrible disaster at Ibrox, in which 66 people died in a stairway crush at the end of an Old Firm clash.

In the aftermath of the disaster Scottish local authorities enforced severe restrictions on the numbers of spectators admitted to the larger grounds, the capacity of Hampden was cut from the 134,000 that had watched Celtic v Leeds the year before to 85,000.

And finally respect to those that lost their lives
in the helicopter crash near Blackpool a few days
ago.

I don't remember this at all, its always sad. But not an excuse to ban Standing at games. Obviously the ground was over crowded like hilsborough was and this led to the deaths. Actually i don't know how they died, probably due to crushing i imagine.

Hi boro boy I like you dont like the idea of sitting fans
down for some reason it quietens crowds down

I do not know the attendance for Ibrox that day
but they say in the newspaper report that the capacity
of Hampden was cut from something like 134,000
to 85,000 I think it is now about 55,000
and Celtic get 60k most home games

Imagine 134,000 fans standing with nowhere near
the understanding of crowds

I think this was a very good reason to ban standing only at grounds to be honest. These people lost their lives at a football game, that should NEVER happen. And this disaster led to Rangers being one of the first British clubs to build an all seater stadium. Thankfully we now have the design and technology to build stadiums with standing and non standing areas(i.e Germany).

A real terrible shame, but atleast they weren't lost in vain as it woke a lot of people up to safety issues and now stadiums are completely safe and fatalaties unheard of.
