Today we go back to 1988 at Stamford Bridge in the Second division play off second leg. Now older fans will know that only two years earlier, Middlesbrough Football club just survived liquadation after a last minute buy from a consortium lead by Steve Gibson.

Two years later they were now on the brink of returning to the old First division, but Bruce Rioch's babes had work to do at Stamford Bridge after Bernie Slaven but Boro ahead at Ayesome Park in the first leg.

I didn't know they playoffs used to be like that. So is this right what i'm thinking, the bottom two in the old Div 1 went down, the top two in the old div 2 went up. Then the 3rd from bottom in div 1 which in this case was Chelsea and the 3rd place team in Div 2 which was Middlesbrough play each other in a 2 leg match.

Why did they change it!!!! thats better than the system that we have now.
