David Moyes is ready to offer Barry Ferguson a way out of Rangers by trying to sign him on loan for the rest of the season.
The Everton manager has been scouring the transfer market for a commanding midfielder and has been alerted to Ferguson’s likely availability following a bustup with Ibrox boss Paul Le Guen.
Although Ferguson, 28, had an unhappy spell at Blackburn, he is prepared to consider a return to the Premiership after being stripped of the Rangers captaincy and told he will not play for them again while Le Guen is in charge.
A loan is viewed as the most convenient answer to the bitter stand-off and Moyes is keen after struggling to identify any other suitable midfield candidates.
Despite a 1-0 win at Motherwell yesterday, Rangers fans protested against Le Guen, who is believed to have taken exception to Ferguson’s attitude towards some of the foreign players at Ibrox.
"It remains to be seen what will happen," said the former Lyon coach. "It depends on my own situation as well, but I have to think of the team above any individual and it will be complicated for him to play again after what has happened."
West Ham are also sure to show an interest if Ferguson is loaned out.
BOLTON are rumoured to be leading the chase for West Ham's under-fire skipper Nigel Reo-Coker.
Trotters boss Sam Allardyce sees the England Under-21 star as the ideal replacement for Ivan Campo, who is set for a move back to Spain this month.
The Hammers are believed to have rejected bids in the region of £6.5million for their young captain from both Arsenal and Manchester United towards the end of the last transfer window.
However, after a string of poor displays from the former Wimbledon man this season, new boss Alan Curbishley may be prepared to let him go for as little as £5million.
FABIO ROCHEMBACK looks to have played his last game for Middlesbrough after telling boss Gareth Southgate he wants to leave the club and return to Sporting Lisbon.
The Brazilian star said: "I am doing everything I can to return to Sporting. Already I have spoken with my manager and told him that I want to leave and would adore to go back to Sporting."
The Portuguese giants are keen on a deal for the 25-year-old midfielder, but are currently being put off by the the £5million tag slapped on him by Boro.
WATFORD boss Adrian Boothroyd is set to make a swoop for Fulham striker Collins John.
Cottagers boss Chris Coleman has admitted that while there has so far been no approach from the Hornets for the Dutch star, he expects the Premiership strugglers to follow up their interest from earlier this season for the striker .
"We haven't had an offer for Collins John from Watford. A long time ago they expressed an interest," said Coleman. "There could be an offer today because they'd want to sign him early doors in the window if they do want him."

That was the idea in the 70s and early 80s when Pele, Beckenbaur, Cruff played in the US. It failed then, as it might fail again. Hopefully they won't make the same mistakes.

Ajax are in talks to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Edgar Davids. - (The Sun)
I read a day or two ago that this was a done deal, only need to put pen to paper.
Fans are in tears as the window comes to a gradual close, realising that the incessant, recycled rumours have become part of their lifestyle and got them through the arduous month of January. From February, it's just plain old football - with plenty of new additions, for some clubs at least, with new merchandise for available to buy within days. The Vincenzo Montella t-shirt has already been released by Fulham and now Inter Milan and AC Milan are vying for the right to manufacture products with Frank Lampard's ugly mug on it, says the Mail on Sunday.
Lampard - also known as 'Lamps' for his ability to light up any conversation by using his Latin GCSE to good effect - can buy out the remainder of his contract in the summer and become a free agent. This would personally cost England's finest ever player £8m, £7.82m more than he recouped from his autobiography. However, the Milan sides would cover this with a comfy signing-on fee while earning it back with a 'Plates and Mugs Collection', retailing at €19.95.
Sunday means a bumper edition of 'Madness and Mourinho'. Jose Mourinho will be out of a job say The People - Roman Abramovich is willing to pay £11m compensation to get this youthful rebel out of one of his many organisations. In fact, the price is a snip at half of what Shaun Wright-Phillips cost. In come Guus Hiddink and Frank Rijkaard, say the Sunday Mirror. Working as a team, they will lead Chelsea to many years of joy and blissful happiness... or realistically a direr situation than at present. Moreover, the chances of those two agreeing to work under an autocrat are negligible, no matter how much money Roman throws.
Tottenham fans must close their eyes immediately: the striker that epitomised a generation of English flops up front is heading to London. Everton have decided enough is enough for James Beattie after losing thousands of pounds each day in lost footballs. One source said: "Shooting practice with James means literally hundred's of balls fly into the motorway and beyond, so we have to cut our losses now". David Moyes is currently smirking at the £4.5m the club may receive for 'Beats', say the News of the World, but may have it wiped off on the news Peter Crouch is above Beattie on Spurs' wish list. The Liverpool frontman has failed to impress Rafa Benitez with his Spanish, or performances, and was linked with Newcastle earlier in this glorious window.
Martin Jol will need to invest after departing with the young, angry man who already has a family to care for - Mido (apparently he only has one name). Manchester City have compiled a character report on the Egyptian, and think he will fit in superbly with fellow slackers Giorgios Samaras and Darius Vassell, and will spend £3m.
Expect Darren Bent to move away from Charlton before the end of the deadline, but only just. The club are keen to secure an eight-figure sum in case they are relegated to the Championship and his value plummets. All enquiries made about Bent, from the likes of Chelsea, Fulham and now West Ham have been met with a crazy valuation of up to £20m. But with West Ham seemingly keen to pay anything requested, maybe they will line-up a £17m bid as the Mirror reports. Poor Curbs struggles with figures and maths, but his problems will be put to one side at the sight of a familiar face from his Charlton days, as his doctors have advised.
Cup-tied he may be, but Gareth Bale continues to be our man of the window, and his value hasn't dropped a penny. Tottenham are now favourites, for the third time in a week, with rivals Man Utd pulling out citing "Player not worth that. Abort." It is likely to mean prices go up again next season for tickets and season tickets, but fans can hardly complain considering the bargain they currently get at White Hart Lane. Welshman Bale has 72 hours to decide his fate says the tabs, but that's triple what Jack Bauer gets each series.
The Mill has realised over the last few days the small, but significant, number of 'clingers' at major clubs: players who refuse to move away even when scarcely playing because they want to be part of a successful club and cannot bear the thought of playing at a lesser club. They include Alan Smith, Darren Fletcher, Wayne Bridge, Shaun Wright-Phillips and many, many more. Is Wes Brown part of that club? Another player linked with a move to North London, but reports say he rejected Spurs. With little prospect of playing Newcastle, Bolton and Middlesbrough have signalled their interest.
West Ham need to get rid of a few players, and Matthew Etherington is definitely one of them. Two clubs are battling it out, Fulham and Everton, but the former are leading the way for the £3m man. Mill thinks he should shave, work on his crossing, and look a little happier before a transfer. Do the Cottagers have any money though? Chris Coleman is still attempting to dump Collins John on the poor side that takes a risk. At an asking price of £3.25m, most have said no though Wigan, Charlton and Sheffield United are eyeing a loan deal.
The rumour of the day goes to the Mirror for an innovative and exciting bit of make-believe. Blackburn's David Bentley is on the way to Valencia after amazing the scouts of the Spanish club. Sadly, they failed to arrive at Kenilworth Road, claiming they didn't want to pollute the environment with a plane trip they knew would be meaningless.
