LA Galaxy midfielder Peter Vagenas said there is resentment at the club over the deal signed by David Beckham.

The Major League Soccer club agreed a deal that is worth £128m to Beckham over the five years of his contract.

And Vagenas told BBC Five Live: "I think, as we all are fans of soccer, he is David Beckham and a wise man told me you're worth what you negotiate.

"But at the same time, of course there's resentment, I'd be lying if I said there wasn't."

Vagenas, a holding midfielder, has been with the Galaxy for six years and was a member of the US football team at the 2000 Olympics.

He has made more than 150 appearances for the club and captained them to a cup double in 2005.

Vagenas, who is thought to earn in the region of £63,000 a year, added that he does not blame Beckham for accepting the contract he has been offered.

"He's not stealing the money," said the Pasadena-born player.
"On the one hand more power to him and on the other you say 'why can't I be getting some of that?'."

Beckham agreed his deal with the Galaxy on 12 January and is expected to join them when his contract with Real Madrid expires at the end of the current season.

His deal means that Beckham will be earning 500 times more each week than most of his team-mates at Los Angeles.

£63,000, thats what players over here should be on, none of this 50,000 a week shite. If that was to happen, normal fans would be able to attend the games as the prices of the tickets would be much, much lower. I just hope that with the appointment of Beckham going to La Galaxy that the wages of the other players do not increase as this would cause ticket prices to rise over in the states.

What is the price for a game in the MLS?

63,000 is more than 50,000 a week by 13,000 pound. I don't think tickets for mls would be that high, as it's not as popular as american football or baseball

oops sorry, misread the report :icon_redface:

Yeah, 63,000 is the right amount of money. no EPL player would ever want to live on that.

The MLS was never going to progress without them being able to pay higher wages. Sad fact but its true. If this isn't just a rule they have bent for beckham, then it could lead to better (and greedier) players going to play in america. Much like the new york cosmos.

It could actually get out of hand and all the players from European clubs might go over to the MLS as i'm sure the US teams will have bigger financial backers than the ones in the UK bar Chelsea.

well next season, premiership clubs will be lot richer.

Because of a new TV deal with the premier league and foreign TV, where chelsea made £30M for winning the premiership, the bottom clubs will now make £30M. God knows what the winners will make but it will be a hell of a lot

Boro boy...I'm a big supporter of the Chicago Fire, Anyway, to answer your money question, as for the Fire, the tickets, if you buy single game, are between $20-50 (10-25 GBP). So compared to EPL prices this is relatively cheap, although many things here are in comparison...the biggest problem with the MLS pay scale is the fact that the league is heavily salary capped in order to avoid the "crash and burn" event of the over payed players in the 1970's here.

Not really surprising David Beckhams deal would not cause trouble and resentment

Im wondering if this is a sign the yanks are starting to take football seriously.
If they do,its bad news for the rest of the world a few world cups down the line..

well the wages in MLS for regular players are alarmingly low
so its understandable that his arrival might not be taken too well by some of the staff
some of the better players dont make a year what some make in a month in europe
so u can imagine the sort of money Beckham is on will not be taken too kindly
i wonder if there is a get out clause for beckham if things dont work well for him

i still think the fans or football attender need to sort of make an association or society or whatever u want to call it
to have a say in the world of football from staduim security, to tickets prices, ticket allocation etc
I know its a far fetched idea
but i have had it a while back & thought of several schemes & rules, &what have not
u may think its ridiculous or unwarranted or not feasible
but there is a lot of power & business & money in the game
that boils down to the fans
if u want u can apply that to most of the popular sports
UEFA, FIFA are the biggest & stronget associations in the world, maybe F1 Ecclestone is powerful or NBA but none have the wide audience & follower as football
the future doesnt seem so bright for the fans, its football for heavens sake, playing in the regions of 100 dollars in average to attend games in good section is simply outrageous
it not about the single match ticket price
the fans are average middle class, & working class people who many cant no longer afford season ticket, & only can watch a handful of games a seaosn
the best example is the decline of match attendence in Serie A to C in Italy despite the popularity & success of the league(nevermind this seaon in particular)
it could start happening in all of Europe

just y 2 cents
apologizes if I went off topic
peace Lulu

sometimes around here
they let u enter the football grounds for free
the cheapest most accessible tickets are as cheap as 5 dollars
but then again , the local football leagues has been in a slump for several years now, people prefer watching at home
