The Government is going to go ahead with updating the nuclear deterrent.

Good or bad?

No-one got any opinions? You should know by now I won't let one of my threads die that easily ;)

I think it's a necessary evil - you can't let countries like North Korea and potentially Iran have that capability without having the same deterrent yourselves.

An interesting question though is would the UK ever actually use a nuclear weapon, even if they'd already been hit themselves? It would cause the deaths of so many innocent people.

I'll help you out mate ;)

I think this topic has both pro's and con's hidden in it. So looking at it from a neutral perspective you'd understand the situation but kinda feel baffled to say whether its good or not.

Good: Obviously, protection. It'll only take one silly attack from a country and everyone will go mad, hopefully this will not happen but you have to be prepared for the worse.

Bad: Theres a number of things that the government can improve and spend the money on; NHS, crime, housing, immigration, travel/global warming.

People will argue for whatever side but looking at it like that I think will make you think overall whats best and it seems to balance out in the long run.
The reason I think people are against the idea is that with all the conflict going on in Iraq immediately gives them a reaction with anything related in that aspect.

Thanks :D

The argument that the money could be better spent on other areas such as the NHS is a good one. However, it seems to me that this is being paid for by making other cutbacks on the Armed Forces - the Navy now receives only two thirds of the money it received when New Labour came to power, and the future closure of the dock at either Portsmouth or Plymouth will also save them a fair amount.

Well I think whatever decision they come to, people will still argue. Personally I think they'll go with Nuclear, theres certainly alot the public and media don't know about whats happening from a government status so there must be a reason as to why they've made ideas on this topic.

I love how our Nuclear weapons are called "deterrents" whereas everyone else's are called "Weapons of Mass Destruction".
