View Full Version : Are players the reason for bad referees?

You see it week in week out. A ref makes a bad mistake and players surround him, arguing at him, simply for no reason as he will not change his mind. I think this adds more and more preassure on the referee to act upon fouls and to make dicisions too quick.

The players should have to respect the referee like they do in rugly, then the ref would not be under so much pressure, well not as much pressure anyway. The way some players approach the ref is wrong diouf was sent of when he was last at the Riverside for swearing at the ref and I was 110% behind the ref decision.

Referee have to make unbiast decisions very quickly and they could do without thick, greedy un-diciplined players shouting and whinging at then throughout the game.

I think the main reason for bad refs is actually perception and the fact it is so much easier to spot their mistakes with all the video footage that the media analyse.

That said I don't like the way players surround the refs, but you talk about the diouf incident, if you were at the game you would have sworn at the ref. Fair enough joining in with a chant is different from swearing at someone's face, but there is so much at stake that emotions are always going to be high.

I don't think it makes a difference to be honest, the refs are probably used to it. However I still think it's unacceptable

IMO Refs should hammer down on stuff just like the diouf example there...

If Referees where more strictor and give cards for even confronting the ref... he should get booked!...

If Refs punished players for ever underlining the ref i think it would make the players respect the refs more and therefore if a player gets a decision against him which in his opinion was not right he would then just get his head down and back to playing.

Theres just not enough professional players in the game to stop those kinda things, I reakon John Terry is a prime example of professionalism in the game when he got sent off a few months back he diddint pointlessly argue the point with the ref!, he just strolled off the park like a pro footballer should and if i remember right (please tell me if i'm wrong) it was a fair tackle too!

If players dont start respecting the ref theres not gonna be alot of decent refs left in the game!

Remember that Swiss Ref that got the death threats?, He then quit because of that! :(....

If the rugby players respect the referee why can the stupid footballer respect them? In rugby they call the ref sir, now that is respect and football players should take this up.

Was about to say the same thing. Rugby is a much more physical sport, yet bar a few nutters who try and kill their fellow players, there is much less malice.

It's no coincedence refs are respected more

Tottally agree with you there mate, but unlike rugby we dont use video evidense in our game... and personally i like it that way.... i would really hate for the footballing game to be like that, I like the old fashioned ref decision... (Sorry got a bit side tracked there from the subject)

But yeah i get your idea but footballer calling the ref sir wont help i dont think, The footballer will still continulusly harass the ref... Sir or noo Sir... All i think is the Refs should be tougher on the players and make them respect the ref through tougher and strictor decisions

Doesn't have to be literally sir, but the idea of showing more respect.

Also we need video refs http://www.myfootballforum.com/showthread.php?t=1102

I think only the captains of the teams should be the only people allowed to talk to the ref. And if they are disrespectful to the ref, they shouldn't really be captain.

I though that's the way it's supposed to be? may be I'm thinking of the league I play in.

There should be a lot more respect towards refs and refs should have/get the balls to demand respect. The can clearly state to each team's captain what can and can't be done. He just have to say 'your players crowd me, yellow cards for the lot" (that what I would do as ref).

Unfortunately, players come from different country and in their development as a player they get this behavior of questioning/arguing a call. Until a strict code is implemented across every country (and referees follow it), hopefully, respect towards the ref, as in rugby, will be accomplished.

Can't believe Channel 5 commentators, accusing the ref of being petty and fussy when Milner shouts so the whole stadium can hear,
"FUCKING ******"
He gets booked, which is the standard punishment for dissent.

NO!!!Referees are to blame for allowing players to behave like this!!On the park they are the law and the ultimate power, players do it cos they are allowed too..
