So it's them pesky foreigners ruining the English team eh?

If we banned the foreigners I suppose English players could be promoted from the Championship, 1st Division and 2nd division into the Premier League and turn them into top class players like Wayne Rooney, Aaron Lennon and Michah Richards. Is that how it would work?

And we're not producing young quality players as we did in the golden olden days I understand. Yet we have such unusually talented young players such as Rooney, Lennon and Walcott, with Danny Sturridge on his way, and I'm wondering when we had such talent in the past at that age. Any idea when this was? I must have missed it. For example I've been trying to remember a more gifted English teenage winger over the past 40 years than Lennon. And I'm completely stumped. Any chance of helping me out here?

If young English talent isn't getting a chance I'm puzzled why the youngest players ever to play in the Premier League include the likes of Lennon, Milner, Vaughan, and Rooney. I can't help noticing a common denominator here. They're all English and were all 16 year old school leavers. 16 is a bit young to play in the Premiership isn't it? Too young some might say, but surely it can't be claimed they are being held back. Is this what they mean when they say if your good enough you're old enough? Presumably if you're not good enough you'll er, not be good enough. What's that saying about pigs ears and silk purses?

I'm aware some of the top clubs have a shocking record of producing English talent for some time now, and Fergie for one isn't happy about it. But the good news for him is that he's now got a real quality talent in schoolboy Danny Welbeck, who is a member of the talent laden England u17 squad. Also he's got two likely lads in the u16 squad, a team that player a very high standard of "technical" football (would you believe) unlike in the past. But it's best not to draw conclusions on individuals until they go full time next year. Unless of course an obviously special talent emerges, as has been more frequently happening in recent years than in the past, such as Rooney, Lennon, Sturridge and now the latest 14 year old precocious talent to emerge John Bostock of Crystal Palace.

There's quite a pool of talented midfield/attacking players in the u16s and u17s and I'm not talking about the Kevin Nolan/ Joey Barton/ Jenas the Plank limited types.

Big Sam bemoans the "fact" that "very, very few England u21 players play much in the Premiership". I'm thinking he should have a closer look at the squad list. Stuart Pearce (a strange choice I know) made an interesting comment when he took over the u21s, saying that 20 years ago he played for the u21s as an over-aged player when very few of the squad had any first team experience, whereas now the squad had a great deal of Premiership experience.

How do we explain that then eh?

We shouldn't laugh but I see France didn't qualify for the European u21 Finals (nor Spain and Germany). It would seem they have a crises on their hands.

Good read, well written :thumbup1:

We've had this discussion before about the youngsters in English talent and the bottom line is that there is no shortage. The under 21's are doing very well, they are looking promising for the European Championships (unlike the senior team)

I agree with Stuart Pearce, most of the under 21's are playing regularly for their clubs in the top flight. Matt Derbyshire is another newcomer this season and he's already broken into the Blackburn first team and has been picked for the England team. Rooney, Lennon, Richards can still play for the under 21s and Steve McClaren has named relatively young players he might pick for the seniors such as Gabby Agbonlahor, Foster, Young.

There's "no crisis" for Spain and they didn't even qualify. I don't see what all the fuss is about.

And I'm no way near thick either ;)

I just read it, and yea most of your comments are right. I don't like how all these foreign players are being brought into the English game. All those times Arsenal have been fielding a squad full of foreigners annoys me, they should bring in some more English players which will help improve the national team. There are loads of English players with the potential to play great footie, and probably none of them are going to go out to Spain or Italy. They end up getting stuck at shite teams like Wigan, continuing to play average football for the rest of their career.

You do get the odd player or two like you mentioned who shine above the rest and are lucky enough to go to the big teams. But the weaker sides of the premiership would rather bring in cheap foreigners with experience such as Kanu, leaving no spaces for English players to fully reach their potential.

BTW, I support the Irish National team, so generally I don't give two shits about England's team. But I still agree with you on what you said ;)

Does it really matter? football is going to evolve and it has been since the start. Although you think that English talent is in decline, surely with all the competition coming in from foreign players will make the determination for English bred players step there game up. It also promotes English football as the best, whats wrong with that?

Its all about the quality and ability of the player, if big clubs feel that a certain player has those attributes then they'll be picked, its not about where you come from. Big clubs want big players and players that will provide a bright future for them or for profit.
