Where does the word 'soccer' come from?

Has anybody stopped to think about it???

If you have, here is the answer:
In 1863, the Football Association was formed, association is abbreviated to assoc. (keep that in mind).

Shortly after, in the 1880s, students in Oxford university had a tendency of abbreviating words by addign a suffix, 'er'. So breakfast was referred as brekkers, rugby rules was referred as rugger, etc. One day a student, Charles Wreford Brown, was asked if he'd like to play rugger, he was the first to abbreviate "association rules" (Football Association rules). He answered, "No, soccer".

Now you may want to curse Mr. Brown, but he did contribute to the world of football. He became an England international, and F.A vice-president.

Regardless, this is just another useless fact! yes:

Association

Foot ball

Which words remind you more of the game where players try to kick the ball into the back of the net?

Same old english taking away everything us scots achieve.
we made FOOTBALL, we made GOLF, we made most electrical appliances you use in your house today, weve got the biggest supply of oil in britain and if we were independant we would be a richer country that you, Andy Murray is SCOTTISH and not british which by the way he hates to be called.
Scotland fans are known around the world for being the greatest followers of there country and the most passionate ... (not u english, which your papers and commentators love to think)
i cant think of any country to be honest that would say they prefer the english to the scottish.

Piece out from a happy scot ..... oh and btw its fine isreal i here at a very good team :thumbup1: :thumbup1:
and i cant believe i acually heard the english commentator say when they announce croatia were drawing with Macedonia ... " just proves how hard a group this is " LMAO!!!!! ... ok then.

football is english, check your records- the most significant influence on moredern football laws were cambridge rules (cambridge being in england), then theres the fact that the other major influence on the laws of the game was sheffield rules (again at this point i'd like to point out the strong english, and distinct lack of scottish, involvement in the game). then theres the oldest football clubs- before scotland had one, sheffield itself had 5 (3 according to wikipedia- oh, and again i'd like to point out where sheffield is........begins with E, ends with d, 7 letters long)

football is english son, always has been, always will be

cocky little scotsman aren't we

you seem to forget that its not that long ago since you only managed a draw with the faroe islands- we couldn't manage that if we took the cream of englands u15 sunday league teams, and you managed it with professionals
