Arsène Wenger admitted Arsenal had been over-cautious and nervous against Porto last night after they progressed in the Champions League without looking like scoring and having registered only one shot on target from a tame Cesc Fábregas free-kick. The manager promised a return to more free-flowing and dynamic ways when the knock-out stage begins in February.
Goalless draws were a feature of Arsenal's path to the final of this competition last season, including at home to Real Madrid and at Juventus and Villarreal. If the display at Villarreal was edgy, generally there was more to admire in the attacking and passing than here, when Wenger's team knew a draw would suffice and played with that at the forefront of their minds.
