Disgraced Barrow defender James Cotterill is facing an eight-match ban.
The 24-year-old has admitted to the charge of violent conduct which was brought by the Football Association following his attack on Bristol Rovers’ striker Sean Rigg at Holker Street on November 11th.
An FA spokesman said his footballing fate will now be decided by a disciplinary commission.
The South Yorkshire-based defender has requested a personal hearing at the FA’s Soho Square headquarters.
The FA spokesman said it was possible the hearing would be held this side of Christmas and an eight-match ban is on the cards.
“He could be looking at eight matches because his case is similar to what happened to Ben Thatcher,†the spokesman said.
Manchester City player Thatcher received and eight-game ban after elbowing Portsmouth’s Pedro Mendes on August 23rd.
The FA said, however, that the five games Cotterill has already sat out may be taken into consideration.
Last Thursday Cotterill pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm at Furness Magistrates’ Court.
He will be sentenced at Lancaster Crown Court on January 5th and could be sent to prison.
After the hearing Cotterill, who has been suspended from playing by both the FA and Barrow, said he still wanted a future with the Nationwide North club.
Meanwhile, Barrow manager Phil Wilson has said he is looking to get out-of-favour defender Jonathan Smith out on loan.
Smith, rumoured to be one of the highest earners at the club, has not played in any of Barrow’s last seven games.
Wilson said: “We’d like to get Jon out on loan, but at the moment we’re having difficulty doing that.â€
