Middlesbrough are looking to bring up to five new faces in this summer, according to chief scout Don McKay.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate always suggested this season would be a transitional one and indeed that is how it has proved.

McKay now admits Boro are looking to overhaul their side.

"We feel we need four or five players in the summer because we're not too happy with the way the season has gone," McKay told the Sunday Sun.

"I gave Gareth some recommendations and now it is up to him as the manager to follow those through.

"We need full-backs, as well as looking at midfield and a right-sided attacker.

"I don't know how much we will be spending but we have to make a list to bring in some players - because we want to persuade Jonathan Woodgate and Mark Viduka to stay."

We need a new right back, left back, right winger, and another centre midfielder.. and maybe another forward to give dukes and the yak competition..

It would be quality if we could keep hold of Viduka and Woodgate. Viduka still has a few seasons left in him. Woodgate can still only get better.

Im hoping to see several players leave aswell

Mendieta - why is he even still here
Parnaby - if his dad weren't part of the coach team he wouldn't get a look in..
Christie- No way is he premiership quality, time he dropped down a league
Jason Euell - absolute joke of a player.. was Chalrtons 4th striker
Bates - No way good enough

I suppose you could start the overhaulling by bringing in a decent manager, i mean lets set the scenr here, its November 2007, Middlebrough are 18th in the table and haven't won a game in 9 games, Gareth Southgate gets sacked. Thats how i see it anyway. He is never going to be the man to take Middlesbrough forward, he dosen't have half the contacts in the game that somebody like Big Sam has, so therefore he's never going to attract those "big name" players they need in order to make them a top six team.

Does anybody else agree?

hard to hear but it can be of some truth

not every team in the middle can expect a top 6 finish or have what it takes to compete in europe regularly

southgate is a young coach, he needs time & experience to get better
he looks like he is getting better, & understanding the game being a defender himself
england need to produce young managers as well as players
beyond the few in PL, there isnt an new manager coming up ,except Reading Coppell who has earned the respect of his peers
Boro cant expect to lure big players very easily, their youth is among the best in PL
woodgate is too good not to be playing for honors & UCL
I can see him returning to Real madrid & partnering Sergio Ramos
