Being a supporter of the the lesser known teams in Championship, League 1 and 2, I know what it feels like to have "little success", so to speak. I mean in terms of winning more money, silverware etc, I don't mean in terms of winning or losing, promotion or relegation.
With success comes glory, money and silverware, as the premiership proves year in year out. Teams like Man Utd and Arsenal are known for their money, their "world class" players, their success, and, in turn, they gain glory fans, who see "better" football, because of the money and the players.
Personally, I love my little team, with merely 7000 fans and are only just to say known across the UK. I'd dread to think that one day, Pools would be up there in the lights, with the better players, and ending up being known for their money as opposed to their football, and all fans being labelled glory hunters; though I want them to be successful.
What would you rather have? A small team with "real" fans and concentrated on football as opposed to money, or success where money and silverware seems to be all that matters.
This is a case of you can't have your cake and eat it, and I don't know which I would prefer.

...and with money come the better grounds. There's nothing worse than Hartlepool on a wet and windy winters night!
poolie_chick
07-05-2007, 11:41
No, there's nothing better you mean. Hartlepool is known for having one of, if not THE best ground in the lower leagues because of our crappy weather and the positioning of the ground. Besides, it's always good when the weather is crap because we always win when it is lol
poolie_chick
07-05-2007, 11:41
Well, pitch, not ground lol.
Good thread. I agree with you about the grounds. I can't stand some of these new grounds that are just boring and have no atmosphere. I've been to Stamford Bridge, Craven Cottage, Huddersfield stadium, all of which are great stadiums to be in and in terms of architecture great but there's no noise from the fans at all as it just gets lost. Nothing like being in covered terrace standing up and singing. I'll always remember going to Colchester's ground, Layer Road last year where your packed into the terrace you can hardly move the ground capacity is about six and a half thousand and it's just like what football grounds should be. When they were in League One it seemed out of place but just imagine Sunderland/Leeds etc. coming there this season and Charlton/West Ham next season!!!
As for glory I think success is the most important thing. Yes I like to go to Brentford pay my £7 to get in and stand up and all that but just imagine in twenty-thirty years time if they were to get to the premiership or even into Europe (ok in our case it won't happen! but...) the club you've followed for thirty years the club you watched when the crowds were under 10k suddenly playing on the continent. You'd be proud wouldn't you?

reality : any supporter would be crazy to throw away a premiership title of fear of being called a 'glory supporter'.
every fan finds common ground in one of their biggest desires - to see their players fight to gain the best results possible. as much as supporters like to say 'i'll support them through anything, even if we fall down five leagues' (which yes, a lot would) they still look for the glory. they still want and hunt it at every match they go to. it's the ultimate incentive of every football match. to win.
I think once teams reach a certain point their fans and supporters get less picky about wanting things so much.
now i know im not in this thread representing a team in the cocacola leagues, but hey, what harm is a non-leagues view.
being at this level, where my local team has never reached the football league, i couldnt imagine anything better then to see them reach that league to only excel further. to gain the ability to not worry about how we're going to finance next season. to gain the glory fans that other supporters are so willing to keep out of their clubs. because the reality is, we need those glory supporters. we need the extra revenue they bring in, because that tiny bit of extra cash could mean the difference to staying up that season and going down. (something a lot of clubs, league or non-league, are familiar with)a good fa cup run where people tumble through the gates can fund us for a while..
in my opinion what you want depends on what you've got or had allready.
i would love nothing more then to see jason tindall lead out his team on foreign turf in one of the biggest competitions in the footballing world.
yea, you could say i love going to stand at a small conference match and see a team play their hearts out, in an attempt to gain those extra points. but i'd be lieing if i were to say that part-time players, minimal financial support and a few loyal fans seemed better to me then a load of cash, ground improvements, improved performance and a bunch of loyal supporter mixed with a lot of average supporters making their way through the turnstiles.
that was a long post for me. feel free to pick it apart and destroy it. know that it is only opinion.

sod that- i was called a glory fan at school (just because it was close to leeds), only lasted a few years. never heard a thing from them since (despite the fact i was labelled a glory fan when we were in the prem averaging 28,000 and when we were in league one we got 24,000. we where obviously all there for the glory weren't we?). i'd rather go back to a time when a few jealous, "loyal" leeds supporting locals label me a glory hunter than stay in league one. i want to go back to the times when bookies thought we were worth an outside bet on the title, when reaching quarter-finals in the cup was a dissappointment rather than an achievement and when arsenal, man utd and chelsea failed to win at hillsborough. anyone who wants to call a wednesdayite a glory fan would have to look for a long time to find one then anyway- the majority would still have been throughout the dark-ages
What I love about Brentford is that when we do get the headlines it's amazing because it's your team. Yes Man Utd/Chelsea get to see their team play on TV and all that but when little Brentford beat premiership Sunderland it's better than any feeling and Man Utd fan will get out of winning the treble because the club people say "who the fuck are they" too are suddenly headline news. The club that the casual support has only heard of because someone they know supports them is suddenly first up on MOTD.
That said I'd still prefer to be in the Champions League or something for the reasons I said before. The flip side of what I said also means that everyone keeps giving me stick about Brentford, now were infamous!

Of course I would not stop supporting my team in fear of being called a glory supporter. My "fear" isn't being known as a glory supporter, but my club, or any small club that make it big, getting a reputation for having glory supporters only. Everybody forgets that even when a team get relegated, no matter how many fans suddenly stop going, the 10,000, 20,000, or in Pools' case, 6,500 still go. How can they be branded as glory hunters? Yet nobody ever recognises them as still being true fans.
As for what Westboy said, I quite like the sound of Championship. It shows success, but it doesn't drag all the crap stuff along with it like glory fans, and being known soley for the amount of money our club/the chairman has in his back pocket only.
The Championship shows a higher level of skill and success without bringing all the mediated, over rated crap into it too.

This is a hard one. But I would like success. It doesn't bother me as i'm from Middlesbrough, so its who I would support anyway. If Middlesbrough were to become the new Manchester United then it would be great and i'd love seeing us in the Champions league. But the glory supporters would start to annoy me with there southern accents. :)

Arsenal are known for their money
are they :yikes: care to show me then!!
I think you will find many clubs in the prem that have spent a hell of a lot more than arsenal over the years and won fcuk all.
poolie_chick
08-05-2007, 16:08
What do you mean, "are they?" of course they bloody are!! You take away Arsenal's money and they'd get the shit ripped into them. As would the likes of Chelsea and Man U.
Simple fact, without the amounts of money those teams have, they would not have the players, they would not have the nice big seats at the top of the league, the silverware, the success, the fans, the grounds etc.
Don't be so naive as to think the reason that Arsenal maintain their "high status" is not because of money.
thereyouhaveit
08-05-2007, 16:11
LMFAO show me the money, tell me how much they have spent over the seasons which aint nowhere near the other clubs, fcuking hell do you know anything about arsenal :roflmao:
poolie_chick
08-05-2007, 16:24
Are you mad!?... I'm not saying that Arsenal are the biggest spenders in the Prem am I? Please, do me the honour of finding where I said that because I CLEARLY remember NOT saying that at all. I said the likes of Man U and Arsenal are known for their money. Look at it compared to teams in the prem that are mid or bottom table and then the Coca Cola league teams... None of those teams spend anywhere near half as much as THE LIKES OF Arsenal, and MAN U, and CHELSEA (I DID NOT specifically EVER point out Arsenal as a solo)... jesus, with all this emphasising words stuff, you'd think I was talking to a thicko.
And I don't necessarily mean how much they've spent buying players etc... I also mean in terms of new ground, player's wages etc. they don't come cheap and give Arsenal as much as money as say a team like Watford and they'd be completely fucked.

Lol typical how a male should bring in sexism once they've been hammered. In that last post, you've not commented on one thing football related that I said in my last post on this thread. And it's women who get the bad rep. in football? I probably have more balls than you do, mate. Shape up.

Chatting shit aint your thing? :roflmao: funny that cos when you virtually said Arsenal spend hardly any money, I think myself and the rest of this forum considered that as shit... and bullshit at that.
You laugh at me cos I'm female and the STEREOTYPICAL female knows nothing or little about football. I laugh at you cos you're male and YOU as an individual know fuck all about it.
As for HAD more balls than you. I guess you're right. You had a sex change, so now there are no balls on you to compare to. It's ok, you can hang your head in shame and order a taxi for one. We'll forget you were ever here if it makes it easier :)

I have said they aint spent no where near as much as many clubs in the prem and asked you to show me. As for the rest of the forum, like I will lose sleep over it :roflmao:
poolie_chick
08-05-2007, 16:50
Awww :icon_redface: so you'll just lose sleep over me then... How very sweet of you.
And I never once said that they spend the most money in the prem, and by the looks of things, you didn't take into consideration things like their new ground, which I very much doubt cost a bit of loose change, do you? Not forgetting the World Class player's wages. So to be honest, I don't actually see the point that you were trying to make, other than that you're merely a narrow minded, stupid idiot. I never said they spent the most so you didn't exactly have any need to contribute to this thread.
Please, spare yourself more time in the embarrassment taxi. It doesn't do you justice :)

the new ground is built on loans no hand outs by sugar daddies, lass you are clueless :roflmao:
poolie_chick
08-05-2007, 16:58
I'm clueless??
Excuse me, but I do believe that even loans is money spent, right? Hmm, I believe that means Arsenal spent money on building the ground. Therefore, money was spent by Arsenal producing the new ground. Which then means, that Arsenal's new ground must be considered financially. Which means they spent money on it.
You getting my point yet, bigot? Just because you're MIND NUMBINGLY, UNBELIEVABLY, OUT OF THIS PLANET NUMB-SKULLED! it does not mean that the rest of us are.
LOANS ARE STILL MONEY. MONEY WAS SPENT ON THAT NEW STADIUM. THEREFORE, ARSENAL SPENT MONEY ON THAT STADIUM.

poolie_chick
08-05-2007, 17:06
Lol after the first time you edit something I say, it just isn't funny. Actually, it wasn't even funny the first time around.
It was an interrogative, not a statement; but then again, someone so uneducation like yourself wouldn't understand that would they now. I mean, you can't even understand that a loan is money, let alone the different between a full stop >>> .
and a question mark >>> ?
Let me give you a lesson. A question mark goes at the end of an interrogative/question. It turns a statement into a question. A question is something which is used to get an answer from someone.
Now, less two. Sarcastic rherotic. The interrogative (please look above for lesson in interrogatives) was a sarcastic rhetoric, in that it was not meant to be answered, but considered instead.
Lesson three. A full stop marks the end of a statement. A statement is something which is either opinion or fact, but is not a command nor a statement. (If you need a lesson in what a command is, feel free to ask. You'll look stupid, but it's ok, I will help you after I've finished laughing at you, honest)
Oh, and by the way, cos you're so special (needs), YOU CAN HAVE A BONUS POINT :D Oh no, you can't... Yet again, you failed to reply to me in terms of the subject matter which is Arsenal's finances.

Babes? I'm singular, not plural.

Little wee one? Hmm... You have a kind of stutter thing going on there... a little wee one? I believe, that, in effect, you've just said a little little one. Shall I give you yet another lesson in English? It seems you need it. :)

First of all, I ripped into RR cos he's a prick... Second of all, it's MAM thank you, not mum.
And by the way, go jump off a cliff you idiot. You're just replying to this thread for the sake of it now. Get a life and move onto a new subject cos you're getting rather sad. Now, as I was saying before you insanely interrupted with your unresearched comment...
What would you rather have? A richer team with more money, fans, silverware etc, or a smaller club more known for football?
I'm really interested to know what people think on this cos I sit on the fence on this subject, which is unsual... I can't decide which I'd want.

Hmm, take a good look at yourself. Worst thing is, you came on here and responded - your comments in this thread are old news. LET IT GO!
