I have always wondered this i'm sure i've brought this up before. But i've just been discussing this with my mate as he's drinking. I said to him why is this classed as racism if you say paki but not jock.

I used to always say i'm just going to the paki shop. But I meant it as slang which is what jock is. Its a simple debate but I don't know why one is classed as racism but the other is just slang.

Shut up you paki.
Shut up you jock.

Please debate.

I suppose it's all about the history of the word. Jock has never been widely used as a term of abuse, whereas p*** has.

When I worked in England I was called a jock from time to time and it never bothered me as it was usually a friendly reference. The trouble is that a lot of people are getting called Paki's when they are British born. Folk look at their appearance and call them something that they aren't. Pakistani backround but born in Britain. I think if I was born in Blackburn but refered to as a 'Paki' then I'd be hacked off by this.

Because the derogatory connotations the word paki now has, although technically both are racist.

Oh right, well that's probably why then. Its just wrong if I was going to use it as local slang but end up getting done for racism. Nothings happened to me, i'm just saying it would be shit if that situation did happen.

What isn't racist these days, really? You say you're going to order a chinkese and you're shot down for not saying Chinese... you say Paki shop, as in short for Pakinstani's shop, and you're shot down for it etc etc...

I think racism is involved because Paki was originated to be offensive and derogatory - jock wasn't. Also depends on the tone and the meaning in which you say it. "Paki shop" isn't necessarily offensive cos it's just short terms... "The paki b@astard" would be more-so racist.

In australia wogs are wogs and they say so themselfs, they call themselfs wogs.
The only problem we get (its is a big one though) is from the people who dont want to intergrate into the comunitee, for example, they dont want to speak english, they dont respect the aussie culture, they stick to there own groups and outsiders are ignored, they dont respect the national religion of the country, but they expect us to respect their religion, for example they say that christmas decorations in the streets are offensive to them, they have banned the teaching of christmas themed things in schools, oh and its not called christmas any more its called the holiday season.

I've got a Japanese mate who lived in Australia for a number of years, he said that you needed a thick skin if you lived in New South Wales as an ethnic minority because he got a lot of stick. It didn't really bother him, but then he was a paratrooper, might have been different if he was a banker.

CC's description sounds like what you read in the Daily Mail about Britain these days. I would have thought more people move to Sydney than Melbourne and that Sydney would be the 'easier' place to be a foreigner, but maybe I'm wrong or it's because people in Sydney are sick of them.

I don't think foreigners are allowed to move straight into Sydney are they?

Yeh I think we can relate to CC's post. I think it was last year when a muslim community asked for Christmas to be changed to the 'Winter Holiday' because it was somehow offensive. Thats the main thing which forms a divide between ethnic communities these days and UK residents that have lived here for some time aren't having none of it, don't see why we should.
I don't personally say paki because I think its kind of offensive, growing up in London you'll know that theres about every ethnic back round here. Its an old saying because I recall my nan saying it but I've grown up with Indians, Africans, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, Italian friends and this is generally why I would rather not use any terms relating to racial slang.

It's not helped by the media though. It's so unrepresentative. You read and hear so many PC stories but how often are you actually affected by it. Obviously it happens, as Nafe said, but I don't think it happens as much as people think but maybe that's just me.

I think people just do things like complaining about xmas decs just to be annoying or make the news rather than because it actually offends them to be honest

There were these "race riots" in sydney last year were all the wogs took on the skips (aussies) kicked the shite out of each other, there were about 1000 people involved

They are usually sent to industrial towns on the outskirts of the city. well thats what they do in Melbourne anyway.
They all end up in a place called Dandenong, and there are gangs of sudanese, chinese, vietnamese, greeks, macedonians, russians, islamics and even aussies and they kill each other every day.
