Police have condemned vandals who placed a wooden sleeper in the path of a passenger train in County Durham.

A Newcastle to Middlesbrough train struck the sleeper, which had been placed on a section of track at Blackhall viaduct, near Peterlee.

No-one was injured in the 8 June incident, but the driver of the train was forced to make an emergency stop.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the train suffered minimal damage. An appeal for witnesses has been made.

'Catastrophic consequences'

A BTP spokesman said the incident happened at about 1710 BST on 8 June as the Northern Rail service was travelling south towards Middlesbrough.

The driver of the train checked the area and discovered a trackside fence and stones had also been placed on the tracks.

Pc Graeme Cooper said: "It's vital that we find those involved in this incident in order to point out the possible catastrophic consequences of their actions.

"Luckily the sleeper caused minimal damage to the train although the situation could have been a whole lot worse.

"I would urge anyone who was in or around that area at the time to contact us."

There was no disruption to services.

They like to put things in front of trains..should lay them fuckers in front of one.. and run over them several times..

When I was young, I used to put coins on the tracks and the train would flatten them.

I wouldn't put a sleeper on the track though........

He might wake up before the train comes. kill me.
