Scarborough FC no more

Quote:
Scarborough Football Club has gone out of busines with debts of £2.5m.

The former Football League club was wound up at Leeds High Court at a hearing on Wednesday morning.

Boro hoped the local council would lift a covenant on their McCain Stadium so it could be sold for residential use to cover debts and finance a new ground.

But the judge hearing the case felt a rescue package was unlikely in the face of mounting debts which include a sum of £820,000 owed to the Inland Revenue.

A statement from Scarborough read: "While it is sad to see the demise of a club with a proud history of 128 years, the club's finances have for a number of years been in a very poor state and the company has been in and out of various insolvency proceedings.

"Recently the club has been trying to sell the McCain Stadium for development to fund a move to an out of town purpose built stadium. However, this move has been fraught with difficulties.

Despite the support of Scarborough Borough Council and the company's creditors, the club simply ran out of time. The company's total debt amounts to £2.5m.

"Rob Sadler and Mike Saville of Begbies Traynor have been appointed joint liquidators of the company and will now be liaising with Council to agree the disposal of the stadium in order to achieve the best return to the creditors.

"Whilst it is disappointing to see any club go out of business, the making of the winding-up order at this time allows the newly constituted supporters' trust an opportunity to reform and apply for membership of the North East Counties League.

"Hopefully this will ensure football for Scarborough in the coming season."

The Seasiders, a League club until 1999, had been accepted into the UniBond League for the 2007/08 campaign after suffering a second successive relegation last season.

That will no longer happen but supporters may now look to form a new club, playing at a lower level and ground-sharing with another local team.
With only £2.5million, shame the mega rich Premiership clubs could not have helped them out!!

It's a shame in a way but it's also unrealistic to expect prem clubs to cough up that sort of money for a club they have no interest in.

domcassells is an unknown quantity at this point
they are non-league now anyway. it's a shame that the managers/directors have run the club so poorly for them to be in that situation

I think there's only so much of the blame the managers/directors can take, it's simply due to the debts being there for so long and also the fact that it simply is hard for a club like Scarborough to survive these days.

As for giving money, Chelsea gave them a significant sum a three years ago.

Yea, I totally agree. It's a shame to see them go out of business for the sake of £2.5m when the Prem clubs spend more than that on a single player. SHAME ON THEM!!... yes:

It's not the responsibility of a premiership club to look after the finances of lower league teams.

No, of course it isn't... but what the hell are they going to use it on? They could afford to give a couple of million away without even realising it's gone.

Besides, it's not the point of resposibility. Pools helped Darlo out of all clubs when they were financially screwed, and we were only in the league above them and they're our worst enemies. Surely the prem can cough up a couple of mill between them all.

Why?

It's not the job of teams with more money to look after the finances of over clubs. Scarborough would never have been in the position they were in if they had managed there finances better.

Fact.

It's ludicrous to expect premiership clubs to help them. Would you expect HSBC or another big bank to help out a smaller bank that was about to go out of bussiness?

Apart from anything else if Chelsea or another club help out Scarborough then it would put pressure for them to help out every club and at the end of the day clubs have to take responsibility for themselves.

That's different as people "support" the football team. Unlike a bank where they can just switch, its a little hard to just switch teams!! I think they're going to start a new Scarborough team though.

People don't support banks but if their bank goes bust it's worse than your team winding up for some people (depends how much money you got). Also if Chelsea help Scarborough out, then why shouldn't they help Brentford out? And why not Boston? And Leeds United? And...

Scarborough is an exception really as they have gone out of business completely. I see this going round in circles as our "conversations" usually do, I don't think we agree on anything. But I think they should put a percentage of their earnings, even if its just 1% put into a pot to help the struggling leagues and the gap is getting massive.

Why?

It's got nothing to do with them. If you run your club properly you don't go out of business. Simple really.
