Over 200 complaints were made over Sir Trevor McDonald's reference to late comedian Bernard Manning as a "fat white bastard" on the ITV panel show News Knight.

ITV has fielded 148 complaints and Ofcom 85 objections from viewers

On the first edition of News Knight, screened on ITV1 on Sunday night, McDonald introduced an item called This week's racist and dead in which he said: "This week it's fat, narrow-minded comic Bernard Manning. I never thought he was a racist. I just thought he was a fat white bastard."

======================

People really need to get a grip of themselves!! It was all done in very funny humour, I don't think it was racist to be honest.

Bernard Manning is Fat, he is White and he's a bastard. He told racist jokes ffs so whats all the fuss about!!!

The News Knight Program was very funny.

I think its wrong-joke or not.

If bernard manning had of called trevor mcdonald a 4 eyed black bastard in jest,it would have caused an uproar.

Why should us white brits be excluded from being offended just cos were white???

I agree with sa, if bernard a white guy had called Sir Trev a black bastard everyone would be up in arms. And for the record Manning wasn't prejudice against any race he took the piss out of everyone equally!

It was a joke, I didn't take any offense people need to get a fucking life and worry about the REAL world instead of someone making jokes.

Still Racism is it not?

If people don't like it, turn it off don't watch it. I thought it was very funny and the whole program was funny.

Ok I didn't watch the program but guessed his remarks had been taken out of context. I didn't say Manning wasn't racist, but at the end of the day everyone is racist in some way, even if they don't think they are.

On the topic of racism, it seems acceptable for black people or mixed race people (who aren't british say) to support Lewis Hamilton because of his colour? Like TM's comments though if you turn it around and I support another driver because he's white (i.e. wanting the black one to lose) is that acceptable? I know obviously the fact there is only 1 black/mixed race (whatever the correct temr is) driver and so it's therefore a minority but the principles the same.

Well I was shocked when I heard about it, but when I watched it, it was very very funny.

Since when can words actually really hurt you??? So what if someone calls another person a black or white bastard. More often than not, its not even the person who has been called it who takes offence. If someone was to say something bad about myself I wouldn't want anybody else to complain about it. People need to get a grip. I hate the general public. They are all ******s and take life too seriously. They always have. They need to stop worrying what people are saying on tv and more about their own lives and the world might become a better place.

Bit generalised saying you hate the general public when it was 200 complaints made about a show millions probably watched.

Also words can hurt people, people in this case shouldn't have been offended, but to say words should never hurt people is naive.

Everyone's got their right to an opinion and Trevor Big Mac and Fries Donald is a fat black bastard who's got knighted for reading what other people have written.

Tell me this, if I was to call you a prick you probably wouldn't take offence to it because I don't even know you. How do I know if its true or not?

When I mention the general public, my reason for doing so is because I have to deal with them every day in my job and they generally are ******s.

If there are paoiple who are hurt by what a person can say to them then these are very weak people in my opinion. But this is just my opinion.

I wouldn't say they are weak people, they are just easily offended. It anyone has watched this then i'm 99% sure you would find it very funny, its just the way he said it.

Yeah I agree with you in the sense that anyone who is hurt by Mac's comments is weak. I think actually it's just what Manning would have wanted, for him to be the centre of controvesy when he died. He wouldn't have wanted anyone to be PC when talking about him...

What annoys me though about when you say the public a minority of people go around complaining about things like this, or about having flags up. It's definitely not the majority of people. Obviously I don't know what you do for work, but in this case I don't think it says that most people are weak...

People will be just suprised with Trev saying it, I mean for the last 30yrs all we've did is see him read stuff off an auto-queue? Now we're seeing him use his sense of humour and people are just shocked by it.

If id seen it i wouldnt have been offended either.Im pretty thick skinned myself!!

But it goes deeper than that.

What narks me is that the PC brigade who most of us hate and who are destroying our nation have done or said nothing about this!
Im annoyed that nothing has been said because its someone saying it about a white briton..
I should have known tho that being white counts for nothing these days in britain. We are becoming second class citizens.

When talking about the general public I don't just mean for this one occurance. I'm talking about everyone of them who phone up TV watchdogs and complain about stupid things people say or do on TV. Like the biog brother thing with Shilpa. FFS she could have left at any time she wanted and didn't even think she was being bullied because of the colour of her skin.

I just feel this is another way of people trying to take away free speech from the GOOD people of this country.

He shouldn't have said it for my money. I'm too tired to form an opinion beyond this.

Yeah that statement is contradicting I think. You say you hate the PC Brigade and this will probably be, because they whinge at everything. But you are annoyed at them as they have said nothing? Surely saying nothing is good? As if they said something then you will hate them even more.

Not at all!!!!
Just for once they could actually say something in favour of the white man!!

If they was to show equality rather than eroding the rights of us white british heterosexuals-i may not hate them so much.

This tickles me, Is a good sense of humor being drained from the population of today?

Everyone nowadays are too stressed over certain things that effect the society alone.

Chillax.

He made a more offensive joke about an Indian, I wonder if people complained about that...
