Dagenham & Redbridge 0-2 West Ham (friendly)

West Ham United secured a 2-0 victory over Football League new-boys Dagenham & Redbridge in their opening pre-season friendly of the summer, but it was the sight of Dean Ashton back in action again that really had Hammers fans celebrating.

The 23-year-old England striker - sidelined for the past 11 months with a broken ankle - played the full second half as Alan Curbishley's men kicked off their 2007-08 preparations, and came close to marking the occasion with a goal - hitting the bar with a powerful header in the 64th minute.

In the end, it was youngster Mark Noble who grabbed the goalscoring headlines, with an expertly-taken free-kick seven minutes from the end, before Dagenham defender Ross Smith headed a Luis Boa Morte corner into his own net moments later.

The match was a testimonial for Daggers keeper Tony Roberts, who had little to do in a quiet first half as both sides took time to find their feet after just a week or so of pre-season training following the summer break.

Young Hammers striker Zavon Hines, partnering Carlton Cole up front, fired an early shot into the side-netting, before Dagenham midfielders Southam and Huke both went close with long-range efforts.

With 10 minutes of the half remaining, Lee Bowyer narrowly failed to connect with a Cole lay-off just six yards out, before winger Kyel Reid headed a Hayden Mullins cross on to the top of the bar six minutes later.

The interval brought about wholesale changes for both teams, with Curbs making nine in total. New signings Scott Parker, Julien Faubert and Richard Wright came on for their debuts, while Ashton stepped out to a rousing reception from all areas of the ground, and Danny Gabbidon and Matthew Upson also made welcome returns after their injury-hit 2006-07 campaigns.

Just moments after the restart, though, the cheers turned to hushed silence when Ashton was the victim of an ill-timed lunge from defender Jon Boardman, leaving the Hammers striker grounded in pain.

Much to everyone's relief, though, Deano was soon back on his feet, showing no signs of ill-effect and, no doubt, psychologically boosted after coming through his first crunching challenge unscathed.

Minutes later, he sent a 25-yard free-kick flying just inches wide of the target and then, on 64 minutes, soared to meet Boa Morte's inviting cross, only to see his headed effort rebound off the crossbar.

As the game drew to a close, England under-21 internationals Mark Noble and Anton Ferdinand were handed a taste of the action in place of Cole and Pantsil, and it was Noble who eventually broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute, curling a superb free-kick past Roberts after a foul on Faubert - impressive on his first appearance in England.

Two minutes later, Boa Morte whipped in a corner from the right that eluded his team-mates but was met by the unfortunate Smith, who somehow managed to divert the ball into the top corner from six yards out.

The 5,657 crowd went away happy after two late goals and the first sight of Dean Ashton in almost a year, while Alan Curbishley and his coaching staff will have been satisfied with a bright and positive start to their preparations for the new campaign…

West Ham United (first half): Green; Pantsil, Collins, Gabbidon, McCartney; Reid, Mullins, Bowyer, Etherington; Hines, Cole.

West Ham United (second half): Wright; Pantsil (Ferdinand 82), Davenport, Upson, Spector; Faubert, Parker, Collison, Boa Morte; Cole (Noble 67), Ashton.

Sigma 1 - 0 West Ham

West Ham United stepped up their pre-season preparations with a rigorous work-out against Sigma Olomouc in Austria on Tuesday evening.

Hammers suffered a 1-0 defeat against the Czech outfit, but of more concern to Alan Curbishley was an injury to new French signing Julien Faubert, who was taken off with an Achilles injury 10 minutes before the break.

The 23-year-old winger will undergo a scan tomorrow to determine the extent of the damage.

On a more positive note, Dean Ashton continued on the comeback trail with a decent 60-minute run-out, while Craig Bellamy made his Hammers debut and came close to grabbing a late equaliser with a 20-yard strike that crashed back off the crossbar.

Sigma had grabbed the only goal of the game just before half-time, with a neat finish from close range following a well-worked move.

Meanwhile, back at home, the reserve team secured a 3-1 friendly win over non-league side Hornchurch.

Goals from Junior Stanislas, Jack Jeffery and Zavon Hines sealed victory for Kevin Keen's young side, before the hosts grabbed a late consolation.

Hammers will now continue pre-season training work at their Austrian camp before facing Lazio in Lebring on Saturday.

Hammers: Wright (Walker 45), Spector (Ferdinand 60), Collins (Davenport 45), Upson (Gabbidon 45), McCartney (Dailly 45); Faubert (Collison 35), Parker (Noble 45), Bowyer (Mullins 45), Reid (Boa Morte 45); Ashton (Bellamy 60), Cole (Zamora 60).

Great(!) Faubert injured, out for 6 months!:(.....unlucky West Ham.

Lazio 2 - 0 West Ham

West Ham United were unfortunate to slip to a 2-0 defeat against Lazio in their third pre-season friendly of the summer on Saturday evening.

In a tough encounter in the small Austrian village of Lebring, near Graz, goals either side of the break earned victory for the Italians, who are slightly ahead of Hammers in their pre-season preparations.

Despite facing sharp opponents, though, Alan Curbishley's men were unlucky to end up on the losing side, after Craig Bellamy missed a 68th minute penalty and Carlton Cole had two efforts superbly saved by veteran Lazio goalkeeper Ballotta.

Striker Dean Ashton came comfortably through another 45 minutes, while Bellamy played the full 90. Mark Noble and Bobby Zamora were rested after picking up slight knocks in training.

Despite the result, Alan Curbishley will have been satisfied by another strenuous work-out and will look back on their week in Austria as a valuable fitness exercise ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

West Ham United: Green; Spector (Collins 45), Davenport (Upson 45), Ferdinand (Dailly 60), McCartney (Gabbidon 45); Bowyer (Collison 65), Mullins (Boa Morte 45), Parker, Etherington (Reid 70); Ashton (Cole 45), Bellamy.

Leyton Orient 1 - 1 West Ham

Dean Ashton scored his first goal for West Ham United in almost a year as Hammers were held to a 1-1 friendly draw by Leyton Orient on Tuesday evening.

The 23-year-old striker produced a stunning long-range effort after 15 minutes to give his team the lead, and manager Alan Curbishley will have been even more pleased to see Ashton come through the full 90 minutes, looking strong and fit throughout.

In a testimonial match for Orient manager Martin Ling, Hammers made a sharp start, and almost opened the scoring through Carlton Cole in the 10th minute, before Ashton produced his piece of magic five minutes later.

However, the hosts hit back almost immediately with a wonder-strike of their own, as striker Adam Boyd sent a dipping 25-yard volley over Rob Green to bring the scores level.

Five minutes before the break, Green had to be a alert to deny Wayne Gray in the penalty area, while the visitors made the brighter start to the second half, with Calum Davenport and Anton Ferdinand forcing good saves out of substitute goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.

As the game wore on, Hammers' superior fitness levels - exemplified by the tireless Matty Etherington - began to tell, and only a mixture of good goalkeeping and misfortune prevented a winner.

First Etherington cut the ball across for Ashton, who had to re-adjust his body and only managed to direct a header over the bar from four yards out, then the winger again crossed for Lee Bowyer, whose diving header was kept out by Nelson.

As part of Curbs's plan to give his senior players their first 90 minutes of the pre-season campaign, only one substitute was made - Tony Stokes replacing fellow youngster Kyel Reid - and a completely different Hammers side will line-up against MK Dons tomorrow evening, with new signing Fredrik Ljungberg expected to make his debut.

Minute by minute:

10 - Cole fires a blistering shot just inches over the bar from 12 yards out.

15 - GOAL! The moment Hammers fans have been waiting for, as Ashton picks up the ball 30 yards out before sending a fierce, swerving, unstoppable shot beyond the stranded Morris for his first goal in a Hammers shirt for almost a year. Leyton Orient 0 West Ham United 1.

18 - Boyd fires narrowly wide from the edge of the penalty area.

19 - An excellent cross from McCartney is missed by Cole but falls to Reid, who fires his effort high over the bar.

20 - GOAL. Orient reply with a stunning goal of their own to equalise, as Boyd sends a 25-yard dipping volley over the head of Green. Leyton Orient 1 West Ham United 1.

28 - Orient keeper Morris suffers a head injury in an aerial collision and is replaced by substitute Nelson.

41 - Green rushes out bravely to deny Gray from close range.

Half-time: Leyton Orient 1 West Ham United 1.

46 - Leyton Orient substitutes: Saah on for Thelwell, Thornton on for Terry, Demetriou on for Melligan.

50 - Davenport's looping header from 12 yards out is tipped over by Nelson.

51 - From the resulting corner, Ferdinand's header is this time held by the Orient keeper.

58 - Reid cuts in from the right and fires a fierce shot just over the bar.

64 - Leyton Orient substitute: Echanomi on for Boyd.

70 - West Ham United substitute: Stokes on for Reid.

72 - Etherington escapes on the left and cuts the ball back for Ashton, who somehow heads over the bar from just four yards out.

74 - This time Etherington crosses for Bowyer, whose diving header is kept out by Nelson.

78 - Leyton Orient substitute: B Gray on for W Gray.

82 - Leyton Orient substitute: Page on for Corden.

84 - A neat move leads to Bowyer breaking free in the box, but his delicate chip is gathered by Nelson.

86 - Leyton Orient substitute: Kemp on for Palmer.

90 - Leyton Orient substitute: Grange on for Chambers.

90 - Ashton sends a looping left-foot shot just wide of the target.

Full-time: Leyton Orient 1 West Ham United 1.

Leyton Orient: Morris (Nelson 28), Purches, Palmer (Kemp 86), Thelwell (Saah 46), Mkandawire, Terry (Thornton 46), Melligan (Demetriou 46), Chambers (Grange 90), W Gray (B Gray 78), Boyd (Echanomi 64), Corden (Page 82).

West Ham United: Green; Pantsil, Davenport, Ferdinand, McCartney; Reid (Stokes 70), Bowyer, Mullins, Etherington; Ashton, Cole. Subs unused: Stech, Fitzgerald, Ephraim, Widdowson, Hales, Jeffery, Collison, Dailly.

MK Dons 3 - 2 West Ham

West Ham United slipped to a 3-2 defeat against MK Dons in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening.

Following Tuesday night's 1-1 draw against Leyton Orient, Hammers boss Alan Curbishley named an entirely different starting 11 for the clash against Paul Ince's team, as new signing Freddie Ljungberg made a solid debut and the likes of Craig Bellamy, Danny Gabbidon and Matthew Upson got through the entire 90 minutes.

After a lively start at the League Two outfit's brand new stadium, the hosts took the lead on 12 minutes when an effort from midfielder Mark Wright crossed the line before Richard Wright or Christian Dailly could manage to clear.

Just four minutes later, though, Hammers were level when the impressive Luis Boa Morte crossed from the left and a clever dummy from Craig Bellamy allowed Ephraim to fire home.

And just moments later, it was 2-1 to the visitors, with Boa Morte again the provider - this time whipping in a dangerous free-kick from the right that goalkeeper Luke Steele could only palm out to Upson, who stabbed in his first goal for the Club.

Hammers were largely in control for the remainder of the half, without troubling Steele again, and it was MK Dons who came closest to finding the net on a break-away attack, when Knight fired just inches wide.

Six minutes after the interval, the hosts did equalise - and in controversial fashion. Referee Trevor Kettle had Hammers' tempers boiling as he harshly adjudged Spector to have barged Broughton in the penalty area, and captain Andrews stepped up to slam the spot-kick past Wright.

Five minutes later, Ljungberg came close to celebrating his debut with a goal, as his low snap-shot was kept out by Steele, and just after the hour mark Alan Curbishley sent on youngster Tony Stokes in place of the Swedish midfielder - who had only tasted 45 minutes of pre-season action with Arsenal before arriving at Upton Park.

That was Hammers' only tactical substitution of the night - part of the manager's plans to give all the majority of his senior players their first 90 minutes of the pre-season build-up - while Ince made several changes midway through the second half.

The fresher legs eventually told, as Dons grabbed a winner with just 15 minutes remaining. Substitute McKoy raced down the right, and cut the ball back for Knight, who stroked the ball beyond Wright from eight yards out.

MK Dons: Steele (Abbey 73), Edds (Howell 73), Lewington (Stirling 73), Andrews (McKoy 73), Murphy (O'Hanlon 52), Diallo, Wright (McGovern 52), Broughton, Knight, Cameron (Morris 60), Dyer.

West Ham United: Wright; Spector, Collins, Upson, Gabbidon; Ljungberg (Stokes 66), Dailly, Collison, Boa Morte (Jeffery 90); Ephraim, Bellamy. Subs unused: Stech, Hines, Fitzgerald, Hales.

Southend 1 - 3 West Ham

Goals from Bobby Zamora, Craig Bellamy and Freddie Ljungberg sealed an impressive 3-1 win for West Ham United in a pre-season friendly against Southend United on Saturday afternoon.

In a Centenary celebration match for the Essex-based League One outfit, Alan Curbishley named a strong starting 11 and saw his players respond with a hard-working and professional display to see off their local rivals.

After a fairly quiet start, Hammers almost opened the scoring on 13 minutes. New Club captain Lucas Neill - who only returned to pre-season training yesterday following his Asia Cup campaign with Australia - whipped in a quickly-taken free-kick from the right that was met by Zamora, whose firm header was kept out by Darryl Flahavan.

Ten minutes later, the striker came even closer to finding the net, when he headed Bellamy's cross against the bar from just a few yards out after the Welsh striker had broken free on the right.

It was third time lucky on the half hour mark, though. A neat piece of play from the commanding Neill found Ljungberg, whose raking crossfield pass bounced over the Shrimpers' defence and, without time to let the ball drop, Zamora cleverly sent a looping header over Flahavan into the net.

Six minutes before the break, it was 2-0, as Etherington's deep free-kick from the right was flicked on to the crossbar by Bowyer, and Bellamy was on hand to nod home his first goal for the Club.

Five minutes into the second half, another new signing also hit the net for the first time in a West Ham United shirt to make it 3-0. A weak back-pass from Southend's Steven Hammell let in Zamora, who skipped round Flahavan and then cut the ball back for Ljungberg, whose shot took a slight deflection on its way into the net.

The hosts pulled one back six minutes later, when captain Maher struck a shot from the edge of the penalty area that seemed to deceive the unsighted Green and looped past him into the net.

As the game drew to a close, Curbs withdrew the likes of Zamora, Ljungberg and Etherington ahead of Tuesday's trip to Norwich City and, with two weeks to go until the start of the new Premier League campaign, the Hammers boss will have been satisfied by his team's performance as well as their fitness levels today.

Southend United: Flahavan (Collis 72), Hunt, Clarke (Liptak 82), Barrett, Gower (Lokando 88), Maher (Moussa 72), Hooper (McDonald 45), Bailey (McCormack 61), Black (Foran , Hammell (Wilson 64), Harrold (Paynter 64). Subs unused: Ademeno.

West Ham United: Green; Neill, Ferdinand, Gabbidon, McCartney; Ljungberg (Reid 72), Noble, Bowyer (Mullins 64), Etherington (Pantsil 78); Zamora (Cole 59), Bellamy. Subs unused: Wright, Spector, Upson, Collins, Davenport.

West Ham United stepped up their pre-season preparations with an impressive 2-1 victory against Championship side Norwich City on Tuesday night.

In a hard-fought match at Carrow Road, an excellent first-half display saw goals from Jonathan Spector and Dean Ashton - against his former club - give Alan Curbishley's men a second win in three days, while Chris Brown's second half strike proved to be only a consolation for the Canaries, led by former Hammers assistant manager Peter Grant.

The visitors made a bright start, enjoying the vast majority of possession and - had it not been for the excellence of Norwich keeper David Marshall - might have been 3-0 up inside the opening 10 minutes.

First Luis Boa Morte's sixth-minute corner was met by Zamora, whose powerful header was palmed away on the line, then Zamora sent in a low cross for Bowyer to meet with a firm left-foot shot that was somehow kept out by Marshall, before the Norwich stopper made it a hat-trick of fine saves when he again denied Zamora at the end of a flowing move.

On a slick and immaculate playing surface at Carrow Road, Hammers showed exactly what they are capable of with some quick, decisive passing that the hosts found difficult to cope with, and it was no surprise when the deadlock was eventually broken in stylish fashion on 27 minutes.

A neat, four-man move saw Lucas Neill feed the ball into Zamora, who spun away from his marker and laid it off for Boa Morte to thread an inch-perfect pass that released Spector, who claimed his first goal for the Club with a confident left-foot finish from close range.

The visitors continued to exert pressure on Norwich's troubled back four and after Boa Morte and Ashton had both missed excellent chances, the Hammers striker eventually found the net two minutes before the break to silence the jeers of his former supporters - slamming the ball home from 12 yards out after Boa Morte's shot had been parried by Marshall.

Not surprisingly, Norwich came out for the second half in more determined mood, although it looked like Hammers might make it 3-0 on 54 minutes when Zamora was bundled over in the penalty area, only for referee Thorpe to inexplicably wave play on.

Three minutes later, the hosts pulled a goal back, as substitutes Lee Croft and Brown combined - the latter heading a cross past Green from six yards out to give the Norwich fans hope that their team might be able to turn things around.

However, it was the visitors who finished the stronger and might have added to their tally. Craig Bellamy replaced Zamora with 25 minutes remaining to ensure that four former Norwich stars - Green, Ashton, Davenport and the Welshman - were on the pitch in Hammers colours, and Bowyer and substitute Carlton Cole both came close to finding the net late on.

Hammers now face their final pre-season friendly, against Italian giants AS Roma at Upton Park on Saturday, before the big kick-off against Manchester City on August 11, and Curbs will be pleased with the quality beginning to stand out from his team.

Norwich City: Marshall, Otsembor, Drury, Shackell (Spillane 90), Hughes, Doherty, Russell (Martin 65), Fotheringham, Strihavka (Brown 45), Cureton (Croft 56), Chadwick (Dublin 78). Subs unused: Gilks, Ryan Jarvis, Rossi Jarvis, Cave-Brown.

West Ham United: Green; Neill (McCartney 45), Collins (Davenport 45), Upson, Spector; Bowyer, Mullins, Noble (Etherington 70), Boa Morte; Ashton (Cole 79), Zamora (Bellamy 66). Subs unused: Wright, Gabbidon, Pantsil, Reid.

West Ham 2 -1 AS Roma

West Ham United rounded off their pre-season preparations with an impressive 2-1 victory against Italian giants AS Roma on Saturday.

In a hard-fought encounter at a sun-drenched Upton Park, two goals in the space of three second half minutes from George McCartney and Dean Ashton gave Alan Curbishley's men a morale-boosting victory after Ludovic Giuly had put the visitors into a first-half lead.

The Hammers boss had asked for fitness, performance and an injury-free outcome from his side's final warm-up game before next week's Premier League curtain-raiser against Manchester City, and he got all three, along with the added bonus of seeing Ashton fire a superb winner.

The hosts made a bright start and fashioned a handful of attacking moves early on, but the Italians - led by their talismanic captain Francesco Totti - quickly began to show their class, and opened the scoring with a well-worked goal after 13 minutes.

Winger Taddei created some space on the left and cut the ball back for French playmaker Giuly, who took one touch before sending a superb right-foot drive beyond Robert Green and into the top corner.

Seven minutes later, Roma came close to making it two, when Giuly skipped down the right and clipped in a cross that was met by Esposito, whose acrobatic effort clipped the top of the bar.

As the first half wore on, Hammers were made to work hard by the stylish Romans, who finished runners-up behind Inter Milan in Serie A last season and will be fancied to progress in next year's Champions League campaign.

Green was called upon on three occasions to make decent saves before the break, twice from Taddei and once from Esposito and, as the half-time whistle blew, the hard-working Hammers would have been grateful for the opportunity to regroup.

Curbs made two changes at the interval, handing back-up goalkeeper Richard Wright his Upton Park debut in place of Green, while Bobby Zamora was replaced by Dean Ashton, who stepped out in front of the Boleyn Ground faithful for the first time since April 2006 - a fact emphasised by the standing ovation he received.

The 23-year-old striker immediately became the focal point of the Hammers' attack and, after firing a left-foot shot wide of the target three minutes in, he went closer on the hour mark with a rasping 18-yard drive that Curci did well to tip over the bar.

Three minutes later, though, the Roma keeper was finally beaten, and from the most unlikely of sources. A Freddie Ljungberg corner from the right dropped invitingly 12 yards out and, as the assembled pack rose to meet it, a Hammers attacker got there first to plant a powerful header into the roof of the net.

Ashton? Upson? Ferdinand? No, the claret and blue shirt wheeling away in delight belonged to none other than George McCartney, who seemed almost as surprised as his team-mates and the 26,425 crowd to have notched his first goal for the Club.

The Irish left-back didn't get to enjoy his moment in the spotlight for long, though. Just three minutes later, the resurgent Hammers strode forward on the break, as Mark Noble's searching pass found Ashton wide on the right.

Faced with one defender to beat, the powerful striker proved he is well and truly on his way back to full fitness by pulling off a deft step-over and surging past his marker into the box, before slamming home a low 12-yarder that gave Curci no chance.

Not surprisingly, the cheers that greeted the effort were more suited to an FA Cup final than a pre-season friendly and, for the manager and his staff watching from the sidelines, hopefully the first of many similar celebrations in the coming campaign.

Showing greater stamina than their opponents, who don't kick off their new Serie A campaign until September, Hammers saw the game out comfortably and walked off to rousing applause from the satisfied supporters, who will back in even louder voice next Saturday when Sven Goran Eriksson's men arrive in town.

Minute-by-minute:

2 - As a loose ball bounces around in the box, the grounded Boa Morte sustains an accidental kick to the head, causing a delay of two minutes as the physio and doctor rush on to attend to the winger. Thankfully he is soon back on his feet and able to continue.

10 - Ljungberg's powerful free-kick from the edge of the penalty area is punched away by Curci.

13 - GOAL. Roma take the lead, as the ball is cut back to the edge of the box for Giuly, who tees it up before firing a superb strike past Green into the top corner. West Ham United 0 AS Roma 1.

20 - Noble curls a free kick over the bar from 20 yards out after a foul on Bowyer

21 - Giuly's cross from the right is met by an acrobatic effort from Esposito that clips the top of the bar.

22 - Boa Morte's deep free-kick from the left is met by Upson, whose header bounces up and over the crossbar.

28 - WHU substitution, Etherington on for Boa Morte.

30 - Totti's threaded pass finds its way through to Taddei, who is denied by an excellent save from Green.

35 - Green again comes to the rescue, this time tipping a low Taddei effort round the post after Hammers are caught on the break.

43 - Totti's ball releases Esposito but Green rushes out to push the striker wide and he can only divert his effort into the side-netting.

45 - De Rossi booked for foul on Ljungberg.

Half-time: West Ham United 0 AS Roma 1.

Second Half:

46 - WHU double substitution, Wright on for Green, Ashton on for Zamora.

46 - Roma substitution, Cassetti on for Kuffour.

48 - A neat move sees Bowyer lay the ball off for Ashton, who fires wide with his left foot from the edge of the penalty area.

56 - Roma substitution, Brighi on for Esposito.

59 - Ashton almost produces an equaliser, as his fierce left-foot shot is tipped over the bar by Curci at full stretch.

60 - Roma substitution, Rosi on for Cassetti.

62 - Giuly is released through the middle and rounds Wright, but fires his effort wide of the target.

63 - GOAL! Hammers draw level from an unlikely source, as Ljungberg's corner from the right is met by a towering header from left-back George McCartney that flies past Curci into the roof of the net. West Ham United 1 AS Roma 1.

66 - GOAL! TThe game is turned on its head in the space of three minutes, as the hosts take the lead thanks to a moment that Hammers fans have been waiting to see for more than a year. Picking the ball up on the right wing, Dean Ashton superbly beats his marker before sending a low drive under Curci from an acute angle, for his first goal at Upton Park since March 2006.

70 - Roma substitution, Vucinic on for Aquilani.

74 - WHU substitution, Pantsil on for Ljungberg.

77 - Roma triple substitution, Barusso on for De Rossi, Nonda on for Totti, Alvarez on for Taddei.

78 - WHU substitution, Mullins on for Bellamy.

84 - Roma substitution, Pit on for Giuly.

86 - WHU double substitution, Cole on for Bowyer, Gabbidon on for Ferdinand.

90 - Ashton breaks clear on the right but this time his powerful effort is pushed away by Curci.

Final score: West Ham United 2 AS Roma 1.
