Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is launching a £3 million bid for Birmingham City defender Matthew Upson.
The Mirror says the City hierarchy are resigned to cashing in on Upson, 27, as the centre-back has just 18 months left on his contract and has refused a lucrative new five-year deal.
It has alerted O'Neill, who is desperate for a new centre-back as he been forced to rely on youngsters Liam Ridgewell and Gary Cahill this term.
