Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is launching a £3 million bid for Birmingham City defender Matthew Upson.
The Mirror says the City hierarchy are resigned to cashing in on Upson, 27, as the centre-back has just 18 months left on his contract and has refused a lucrative new five-year deal.

It has alerted O'Neill, who is desperate for a new centre-back as he been forced to rely on youngsters Liam Ridgewell and Gary Cahill this term.

The Villa boss watched the former England international in City's 3-1 win against Preston in the Championship last week

liverpool wanted him at some point
but i thought he may be too high maintenace
as far as his injury recurrance
but he is too good to be playing in championship
oneill would do well to get him to villa, as they need a solid center half
3m is a fair price

Its not the only player from another midlands club o neills after. Im sure i read somewhere he wanted Curtis Davies as well the west brom skipper. 3 millions a lot for Upsen, i think hes too injury prone myself.
