View Full Version : How much more does your local team mean to you than your Country?

For me Brentord is five times more important than England. Anyone who follows a team week in week out will say at least twice as more important. Armchair fans will probably say they prefer England to Man Utd/Chelsea/Liverpool whoever they support these days. That said even (some) Evertonians and Man Utd fans were happy to see Liverpool win the Champions League because it reflected well on Spain, sorry England.

My reasoning behind this is that England only play about 5 meaningful matches ever two years, whilst your club is bread and butter. I don't see how people can say they are country over club. Most people, even if just watching on the TV put so much more time into watching their club team than England, so how can winning the WC compare to winning the League/FA Cup?

Maybe for Arsenal/Manu/Chelsea/Liverpool fans who've won recently, but not for other fans.

Even as a Chelsea fan who doesn't quite get there week in week out, club success is so much more important, it's the team you're brought up to support individually where as with Country its all as 1 and you have no choice. All the friendlies and qualification i find pointless and i just want to get back to club football when they are on.

Wouldn't care if England never won the World Cup again if it meant Leeds avoiding relegation tbh.

Course, if the England players actually gave a shit about the national side the fans might be more encouraged to do the same.

Can't say that I knew of any mate.

England means nothing at all compared to Everton.
I prefer international teams which contain Everton players over England when we are not rperesented in the England squad.

<<<That said even (some) Evertonians and Man Utd fans were happy to see Liverpool win the Champions League>>>>

These people aren't proper fans.

I was sick to the pit of my stomach when Liverpool won.

that because they get the top players of the league (or the ones the manager likes best) 1-3 weeks before competition starts. You don't get a team that way, just individuals under a common jersey.

I was thinking this too. Arsenal to me is more important than England, I watch them every week, every CL match and its a routine kind of thing. And I also share more passion towards Arsenal aswell.

i think if internationals were only done outside football season they would have a good few months together

Yeh, it is annoying when they slap them bang in the middle of a week, it can put a team off course if you know what I mean. If your on a role and then you get delayed for a week or so, its sometimes hard to get back into it.

The main problem with qualifiers is that you play San Marino or Lichenstein or whoever and how can any England fan say there delighted to win? You expect it...

This is kind of a difficult question for me because my favourite team (Manchester United) isn't my local team, but I guess I'll see next year when Toronto FC arrive... I know I'm always making references to hockey on here,;) but it's my favourite sport and I adore my local team, the Maple Leafs, and I'd much rather see them win the Stanley Cup than see Canada win the Olympic gold medal. Part of that might be because Canada dominates international hockey and the Leafs haven't won the Cup since 1967, but still...:D

Anybody who read my posts during the World Cup can tell that I am very passionate about my country (ITALIA) but like I said I don't really have a local team and certain people here seem to like hating on Italians:rolleyes: , so I often find myself defending the Azzurri more fiercely than I would Man Utd... So I guess right now in football I'm more country over club, but in general it's club > country for me.

As an ireland fan that 5 0 victory over san Marino was a great feeling. Only as i had a horrible feeling about it as we lost 5 2 to cyprus ( a game i still havent really gotten over but oh well)

Back to the topic. for me personally both our important but Club more so as its week in week out that you go or listen if you cant get there. Seeing you team is better than the odd international. I think its good to support your country when there on but if they lose then oh well whatever theres always next year but theres never that sad devestated feeling of losing an important match like a derby or getting relegated. Or the opposite feelin gos happy when your club wins.
