Cannavaro FIFA World Player of the Year

Cannavaro (498 total points) beat out France's Zinedine Zidane (454) and Barcelona's Brazilian ace Ronaldinho (380). Thierry Henry finished fourth, and Samuel Eto'o finished fifth in the voting by national team coaches and international captains.

Does he deserve this honor? Frankly I don't see how he could be player of the year, not even european player of year. There are other players the have shown to be far more outstanding and important. The runners up are far more deserving of the award.... well maybe not Zidane, he did tarnish his image somewhat and that's hard to overlook.:rolleyes:

Theres no media hype about him, he a good defender but thats about it. I havn't heard anything about him since the World Cup and nothing before that.

That's my deal with it. Never heard of the guy before or after the WC. Maldinini is far better known and a far better defender, but he has never been named best player in europe or the world.

I haven't heard anything of him at Madrid, I didn't really see him much in Germany, so if France won the world cup would their captain be the winner of it? France dominated the final, there were better players than Cannavaro imo.

Are you sure it's not just because he's Italian?:rolleyes: If you've never even heard about Cannavaro, then you need to follow football a bit more...

Zidane is an idiot, Ronaldinho can do all the flicks and tricks he wants, but Cannavaro is the world's best defender and I think it's about time they gave it to a defensive player instead of a midfielder or a forward.

Well he got it because he won the WC. The WC over shadows everyone that didn't do well in it or wasn't able to play, like Eto'o, regardless of how good/incredible their league season was/is.

Zidane did mess it up at the end, but he is a great player no less. He received this award 3 times. Had France won the WC, I'm sure he would have gotten it this time around (without the head butt mind you)
Ronaldinho was incredible in La Liga before the WC and currently is doing wonders too, it was his WC performance that let him down.

i assume he played in the italy world cup squad. I dont know him. I know the others. I thought Zidane would have got it, even though there was the head but incident/
