People: Chelsea are planning a sensational £15million raid for Aston Villa and England star Gareth Barry. Boss Avram Grant will be cleared to make an offer in the January transfer window after the Stamford Bridge scouting staff pushed Barry's claims. Barry's stock has never been higher after replacing Frank Lampard in the England side - and the fact that Chelsea are keen on him suggests that contract rebel Lampard may be leaving, probably for Spain.

Owner Roman Abramovich is willing to back Grant, basking in yesterday's 6-0 thrashing of Manchester City, in his spending although he is also plotting moves for Barcelona idol Ronaldinho and Milan play-maker Kaka.

Barry signed a new contract with Villa recently, but Chelsea's money will talk. The Villa star has formed an impressive understanding with Steven Gerrard in the heart of England's midfield. While Lampard's Stamford Bridge future is in doubt, the move for Barry also poses questions about Steve Sidwell's place in the Chelsea squad. Sidwell - or Shaun Wright-Phillips - may be offered to Villa during the upcoming negotiations. Villa manager Martin O'Neill has fancied both in the past.

He would be better off staying at Villa where he is one of the best players in the team. if he goes to chelsea for the money, he will just ruin his carear

Much like Sidwell. He could of made it to the England squad but opted for the money. Same will be for Barry only he'll lose his place

Sidwell only stood out at Reading because the rest were shite. does he even play at Chelsea at all since joining them?

Barry has just made it into the england sqaud and to leave Villa and ruin it would just be stupid..

yeah i have to agree, going to chelsea does not seem to be a great carear move for anyone. money talks to these players, Sidwell could and should have gone to newcastle, at least he would be playing and have a better chance at getting into the national squad.

it would be a terrible move for Barry. Not only would he be saying goodbye to first team status, put maybe even the England spot. However, this is as long as everything stays the same at Chelsea. If there is a squad shake up, it would benefit him. Say Ballack, Makelele, and SWP or Sidwell were transfered, would it still be a bad move for Barry??

If you remember Cech was no1 then he joined Chelsea and look at him now! Lampard was dissed at West Ham, look at him now, after all those people laughed at the price tag!
