Uefa are to investigate the tackle which forced Celtic midfielder Scott Brown out of the Champions League game with Benfica.

Augustin Binya was shown a straight red card by Swedish referee Martin Hansson for the challenge with five minutes of the match remaining at Celtic Park.

Afterwards, Brown accused his opponent of trying to break his leg and urged Uefa to take further action against the Benfica player.

Binya faces at least a one-match ban and, because he was sent off, the governing body will automatically investigate the incident and decide later this month whether he should face further sanctions.

Control

A Uefa spokesman confirmed: "We haven't received the reports of the referee or the match delegate yet but we always open a disciplinary case for a red card.

"This will be on the agenda of the next control and disciplinary body meeting on November 15.

"There will be at least a one-match ban but all red cards are judged individually so we will need to wait until the meeting to see if there will be a further ban."

i didn't see the incident, but i saw the interview with Scott after the game, and he seemed to think he'd be ok. Do you think the benfica player was asked by the Italian FA to try and take him out of their upcoming fixture??

It was certainly in the 'leg breaker' category. Brown was just fortunate to avoid serious injury. The Benfica player responsible needs a ban of some sort.

That is disgusting isn't it. Should be banned for more than 3 games and probably will be. Horrible and there is no need for tackles like that!!!

Similar to the Niel Simpson one on Ian Durrant back in 88.Durrant was out the game for 3 years as a result of that tackle. He was probably the most gifted scottish midfielder for decades prior to that.

Definetly a career threatening tackle. If you look at Scott Browns face aftyerwards you can tell he got a bit of a fright. No room ion the game for such a tackle. At the very least it should be a 4 game ban.
