Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has offered his services to the Football Association as they look for Steve McClaren's successor.
The FA are currently searching for a new coach after dismissing McClaren over England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008
"Obviously, I will try to help the situation," stated Ferguson. "A lot of people want to do that because it is important to our game that England get the right man.
"It is not easy to get international managers. It is not an easy job and it is not an easy selection process"

He was caretaker manager after Jock Stein died. I think he was in charge during the World cup in Mexico in 1986 although I'd have to check that.

just before he came to manchester united in 1986, didnt do it for long, from what i remember scotland manger died of heart attack, he came in a very short notice, at the start of the world cup and they got knocked out very early on, but he hadn't built the team up.
