Kop fury at owners’ ‘broken promises’

Jan 22 2008 (http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2008/01/22/) by Richard Down, Liverpool Daily Post
http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/liverpoolpost/jan2008/1/6/9EC68829-F349-FAC7-FD5A9D092069EB89.gif lfc protest

THE Anfield Kop used last night’s league fixture against Aston Villa to vent fury at owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett whom they branded as “liars”.
Fans demanded the American owners sell up in the wake of revelations the club could be plunged into £350m of debt.
Hicks and Gillett want to remortgage Liverpool FC to restructure their finances.
But the vocal fanbase made clear their opposition to the move during the Premier League 2-2 draw with chants and banners.
They are furious the pair appear to be reneging on promises at the time they bought the club.
The sporting tycoons pledged to clear the club’s £44.9m of debt and to plough £215m in to a new Anfield.
But this week they announced a remortgage scheme that would cost the club £30m a month in interest payments alone.
This sparked rumours of large-scale post-match protests. Instead fans chose not to “wash dirty laundry in public”, but to sing their opposition from the terraces.
“Liverpool’s in the wrong hands” rang out through the first half. The terraces only fell silent after Villa scored their second goal.
Meanwhile, banners in the ground showed fans’ support for a bid for the club from Dubai International Capital (DIC).
One read: “Yanks out. Dubai in.”
Les Lawson, spokesman for LFC Official Supporters Club, summed up the mood.
He said: “I think tonight they realised they aren’t wanted in Liverpool.
“We want them out – let’s face it, we are their customers and without customers they are owners of nothing.”
John Mackin, of Reclaim The Kop, said: “It was just a call to arms and a public display of their anger toward the owners.
“We’re just waiting for them to get out and the chants in the stadium and banners were the beginning of that.”
Outside the ground, scores of fans told the Daily Post they wanted Hicks and Gillett to sell up and move on.
One fan, Berel Reid, of Liverpool, said: “We don’t wash our dirty laundry in public.
“But I’m very upset at the fact that they said when they first came in they wouldn’t remortgage the club.”

This is all very commendable, but keeping Rafa just means not winning the Premier League. If you are happy with that then fine. How long is it since you won the league now then?

The thread is about backing Rafa! thats why I explained why! I also said if DIC come in then who knows?? By this I mean if they come in and get him the players he wants we will be in with a good chance sooner rather tha later! We will not win it if the 2 lying B'stards stay though thats certain!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they should do the honorable thing and sell their stake in the club. 1) Being so stupid as to publicly say you spoke to Klinsmann did NOTHING but to damage the team-spirit even more than it currently is. 2) We don't want yanks running our football club. Notice football not soccer.

that has absolutely nothing to do with Liverppol competing in the title race.

Birmingham like Boro are a small club, Liverpool are a big club who should be competing for the title

i think rafa can be the man to do it, but he needs the 2 owners to leave so he can have backing of the board. how is approaching manager like jurgen klinsmann going to give confidence to the manager of the team and the team itself, it isnt, that should have been kept behind closed doors and not put into the public.

he is a decent manager, so sorry for saying he is rubbish. he has won some good trophies, like the champions league so i guess my comments were harsh

but i agree with Darren, he will never win the league. I dont think many fans can argue other wise. and above all, isnt the league what liverpool fans want?

We last won the league in 1990!
You said 18 years ago yourself earlier!
I knew you weren't very bright but I took it for granted that you could have worked that out!
It was our 18th title which is still a record!

I have a couple of questions for you now
1) During the time that Benitez has been at Liverpool how many titles have Arsenal won??????
2) Do you think the Manager of Arsenal should be sacked?????

Answers:
1) 0 (same as their total of European Cup wins)
2) Of course not- So why Rafa who has been a lot more successful than Wenger over the same period?????

yes but wenger has done well for years, if he doesnt do well for a few years he is like fergie, is given the benefit of the doubt that he will get it right

until benitez wins the league he wont get that leeway.

also arsenal were steadily getting better, and he has been building a young team

liverpool have gone backwards since last season

i would agree with that statement. also he hasnt done himself any favours for signing that dutch guy or even players like pennant. i mean he was good for us but we were shocked that liverpool thought he was good enough for them.

Rafa led a unfashionable Valencia side to two Spanish titles and a Uefa cup!
They can be generously described as an average La Liga team now whose decline has been gradual since his departure over boardroom squabbling!
We want him to stay as he has a great pedigree & we don't want to do a Valencia!!!

Trin there is a very strong rumour doing the rounds here in Liverpool! I heard about the Yanks not having the money to build the new Stadium and that they would be selling to the Arabs, after Xmas, back in early October! Here are some of the best bits of an E-mail thats been sent around Liverpool fans from the same lad who first told us about the Yank takeover & the signing of Torres! God I hope this "Inside Information" comes true:-

A Press conference will take place on Feb 18th to announce the following:
The club has been sold to DIC for 375 million pounds!
Al Ansari,CEO of DIC, has completed his due diligence!
Lying twats will make a 70 million dollar profit!
Rafa will stay & Gary McAlister will be named as his assistant!
Rick Parry who upset DIC members last year will be replaced by David Dein!
The Summer will see DIC massively invest in players!
£85m plus player sales will be made available & whatever is made from sales. This will give Rafa a transfer budget of about £115m.
The new stadium will be built!

This is all meant to be sorted now but for some reason has to be kept under wraps till Feb 18th!

Remember where you heard it 1st!!!!!!!!!

pretty impressive record there. If the board back him probaly then i dont see why liverpool cant be battling for the title in a couple of seasons.

Yes a pretty impressive record nobody could deny that, just one thing missing though. The one trophy that Liverpool fans all want, and still it eludes you after all this time however. Just a shame that you continue to be in denial.

Dein's Dubai link to Anfield suitors

QUOTE
Former Arsenal and FA power-broker David Dein has been linked with a behind-the-scenes involvement in Dubai International Capital's renewed attempts to buy Liverpool from beleaguered American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

The claims coming out of Dubai follow Dein stopping off in the United Arab Emirates capital for talks on his way back from a Christmas holiday in the Maldives.

In all likelihood he faces the longest of waits to return to the Arsenal boardroom, where a hostile set of directors have a lockdown agreement not to sell shares.

Dein, who was an Arsenal director when they agreed their massive stadium sponsorship deal with Emirates, has plenty of contacts in the UAE, including DIC personnel.

But Dein, chairman of Russian tycoon Alisher Usmanov's Red & White holdings vehicle who are looking to increase their 23 per cent stake in Arsenal, has pledged his lifelong support to the Gunners.

Since his acrimonious split with the board last April, he has turned down all offers to work for other clubs, including Barcelona, so any talks with DIC connections would only be on an advisory basis.

Meanwhile, mystery surrounds the future of Foster Gillett, the son of Liverpool co-owner George, who was employed to provide a direct link between boss Rafa Benitez and the owners.

Foster has not been seen around Anfield for a fortnight, with suggestions from inside the club that he 'hasn't cut the mustard' and 'was enjoying himself too much'. However, the club insisted yesterday that Foster and wife Lauren had already bought a house in Liverpool and were purely in the United States on a short break.

Denial????????????????????????
I dont think I could be clearer in my opinion of Rafa!
We the Liverpool fans want this man to stay coz we think he is the best man for the job!
If he gets the right backing I am certain he will get it right!
I have backed this up with facts & figures!
You just keep on saying: He wont win it!
When G&H go then you will see!

It's not a question of us airing our dirty washing in public, after all this is not our dirty washing. It's the dirty washing of two asset strippers, out to suck money from a world respected football club.
I don't know if it's just coincidence that they bought the club in the run up to Capitalist of Culture, but I strongly suspect that they have been sitting wringing their grubby Faginesque mitts for quite a considerable time. These two fatherless sons from across the pond are absentee landlords They will be briefed for press confrences. Show their loyalty to the fans and the club but, they would never dream of being interviewed by Alan Parry, for fear of showing their ignorace about the game or their true intentions
Football grounds have always been a place for likeminded people to show their passion. Their humour, their anger, their sorrow ,their belief and their dissapointment. Ever present is the opposition, we shout at the opposition, we're allowed to. Forever shall we have this right.
Anyway, I don't know a single person in this city who hangs dirty washing out

Why do Liverpool Fans refuse to think Rafa can't get it right in the Prem i mean since he came to Liverpool you haven't got close to winning it,now don't get me wrong I'm not gonna start saying Rafa won't win the league but my opinion on it all is Rafa doesn't have the tactical awareness to do well in the Premier
