Tottenham defender Gilberto has explained the reasons behind his move to White Hart Lane from Hertha Berlin, and the Brazilian has revealed he made the switch due to a desire to play for ‘a top team’.
The 31-year-old was signed by Spurs boss Juande Ramos at the end of the January transfer window but has failed to feature for The Lilywhites since his move due to a calf injury.
However, the Brazil international is now prepared to make his mark in North London, and revealed his hopes of making his debut against Birmingham on Saturday.
“I had a muscle problem in my left calf which hardly anyone knew about,” Gilberto told Bild. “Now I am fit and Saturday’s game against Birmingham will be my first.”
Having left a Hertha side sitting mid-table in Die Bundesliga for a Tottenham outfit in much the same position in The Premier League, Gilberto says he saw a ‘winning mentality’ at Ramos’ side which was lacking at The Olympic Stadium.
“This [Carling] Cup victory shows why I left Hertha,” he said.
“I wanted to play for a top team who can win the title. At Hertha the winning mentality was missing, there was too much fear sometimes.
“Hopefully soon Hertha change their mentality, the club is deep in my heart. I hope that next season we play against each other in the Uefa Cup. That would be my dream.”
I can see this lad getting a few games, Ramos would have definitely wanted him for a reason and the Birmingham game is a great chance for him.
