Tottenham may have to move out of White Hart Lane - their home for almost 110 years - as they seek to build on their Carling Cup success and realise their ambition of qualifying for the Champions League.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the club are soon to make an announcement on their future plans and, although most fans would prefer to remain at their present home, there are limitations to extending the current site.

The capacity of White Hart Lane is just over 36,000 but Tottenham want a ground that would accommodate about 50,000 supporters. That would allow them to maximise match-day and commercial revenues, but should also ensure that the ground was regularly sold out.

Extending White Hart Lane has not yet been ruled out but, as well as the limitations of the present site, that option would probably mean vacating the stadium for a time and the cost of sharing another ground, possibly West Ham's Upton Park.

Other options include a site to the north of White Hart Lane, and also Enfield.

Haringey Borough Council say that they have had have had "constructive dialogue" with Spurs, but transport links to White Hart Lane are likely to be a sticking point with any expansion. The council have been lobbying Transport for London to extend the Victoria Line of the underground.

The importance for Tottenham of increasing the size of their stadium was underlined by the recent findings in the Deloitte Football Money League. The report placed Tottenham as world football's 11th biggest club and by far the largest of those clubs not to compete regularly in the Champions League.

The statistics particularly underlined the potential for improving Tottenham's match-day takings.

After their move to the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal more than doubled their match-day revenue to £90.6 million, almost £60m more than Tottenham's present figure.

A larger venue could significantly narrow that gap and enhance Spurs' chances of sharing the additional broadcast pot that is available from playing in the Champions League.

Would it be possible to just expand the lane? white hart lane is one of my favorite grounds in the premiership. would be a shame to see the spuds leave it.

I'd hate it if Spurs left The Lane. The latest I heard was that they were toying with the idea of expanding it to 52,000 but there are many obsticles in the way.
To be realistic, maybe they should move and get the ball rolling once and for all. You've only got to look at Arsenals revenue success since they've moved to the Emirates to realise that.

surrounding by houses isn't it? would have to knock some of those down to expand. and what about the ground sharing with west ham idea, doubt that would be very popular with either sets of fans. but in the long run, would be worth it

I say a small report on this on Skysports new and they have already bought a bunch of the properties around The Lane. I say just expand it. I hate when teams move and practically leave their history behind, but thats just me.

it was tough to leave Highbury, but we all knew it had to be done, now we wouldn't change it. What about using the Olympic Stadium, when they've finished with that, it's kinda in your area.

I've got a feeling we'll be staying at the Lane, Levy knows all our history is there and Lewis definitely has the money to buy out all the places around there.

God, I hope you're right mate. Lewis is a billionaire but I don't think he'll be using his money. Last I heard the bloke who designed The Emirates is going to design the new stadium, but we'll have to wait and see. There's been so many rumours.

Same here. I'd hate Tottenham to leave The Lane but if we moved and had the same sort of result you did at The Emirates then I'd be well happy.

I totally agree with you mate. Still associate Arsenal with Highbury sometimes and Man City with Maine Road. Come to think of it, is Man Utd still Old Trafford?

It is Sad seeing History & Tradition getting left behind with ground moves But It is now about survival of the fittest & you cannot compete with Clubs who have 2 or 3 times your income! So if Spurs Like my Club, Liverpool, wish to compete with the best in the future on an even playing field then unfortunately they must move on!

Yeah agreed, but if Liverpool decided they wanted a 60,000 plus stadium would you feel the same about leaving Anfield?

That is reality mate!
Liverpool are expected to move to Stanley Park in time for the 2010-11 season!
This will make me very sad as I have memories from every single stage of my life in Anfield. But I do understand that we HAVE to move if we want to stay a Big club! So Reluctantly I am in favour of the move even though I know it will break both mine & many thousands of other Hearts when it happens!

So it's the best for both clubs then. Thanks for sorting that one out Shanks  :nodyes:
