BORO have confirmed the signing of Turkish superstar Tuncay Sanli on a four-year contract subject to a successful work permit application.

Tuncay, who enjoyed a tour of the Riverside Stadium after passing his medical at Rockliffe Park this afternoon, will join Boro on a free transfer.

Having spent the last two days at Boro's Rockliffe Park training ground, the 25-year-old Turkey international will now leave Teesside for a short break.

He must be out of the country while his work permit application is processed, while Chief Executive Keith Lamb explained that the player needed a break as he had been representing his country over the summer.

Lamb said: "We're delighted that Tuncay has committed his future to Middlesbrough. He is a major star in Turkey so it is a big coup for us to have signed a player of his quality on a free transfer.

"We will now apply for his work permit and don't expect any problems with that. He is then due to return to the club after a short break on July 6, ready to fly out to Austria with his new team-mates three days later for our pre-season training camp."

Tuncay has requested the number 17 shirt at Boro, the same number he wears for his national side, who he represented for the 43rd time in a goalless draw with Brazil earlier this month.
