Independent on Sunday: Consistency now holds the key to Downing's international career but this definitive performance proved his is a special talent who must be nurtured, not chastised, in the future.

Daily Mail: Two years ago Stewart Downing did not believe he had a future at Middlesbrough - but a few more displays like this will persuade even his harshest critics that he deserves an England place.

Daily Telegraph: While Jonathan Woodgate rarely required second gear to contain woeful Wanderers, both Abel Xavier and Mark Viduka performed with aplomb in aspiring to Man of the Match nomination. However, it was the delightful Downing, tormentor of the visitors in creating the first three goals and then stunningly rifling the fourth - who emerged the outstanding performer. A few quoted from the papers this week. Downing was amazing on Saturday from the highlights I seen and what I heard on the radio. I just hope he can keep is performances high like this one as it was great.

Well he is only 22. He looks his age, he is just not built very big.

Yes he does, he knows when to cross, he can read the situation and to be frank he much better than lennon and stats prove this. Someone posted some stats on him and lennon before but I don't know what the link to them is.
