A BOMB scare shut down Middlesbrough town centre after a “suspicious package” was discovered today.
Armed police swooped on The Mall after three men were reported acting suspiciously at about 2.45pm.
They were arrested and the package was located outside the shopping centre.
Army explosive experts were called from Catterick.
Police warned people to avoid travelling to the town centre until the all clear is given.
A vast area in central Middlesbrough resembled a ghost town as hundreds of workers and shoppers were evacuated.
Armed police threw cordons from the junction by the magistrates court on Albert Road to the Purple Onion on Corporation Road.
On the other side of the building, parts of the town centre were also taped off.
More than half a dozen police vehicles were at the scene.
Office workers poured onto the street as fire alarms blared.
Council offices, Middlesbrough House and Vancouver House were among those to make an emergency evacuation.
Middlesbrough Town Hall was also among the buildings evacuated.
A controlled explosion was carried out by the explosive experts from Catterick.

Let's hope the police can sort this one out and that there are no more bombs in the area. We don't want anymore casualties, we've had enough of that in this world.

last nights news said that police don't believe that the packages contained explosives now but they still have 3 men arrested :s

it's probs just the scousers trying to rob everything before todays match.

Wow, glad they found it in time. That would of caused a lot of trouble me thinks.

If they never had explosives in the bags then why was a controlled explosion carried out? Police are thick as ****.

Apparently it was just clothes. The lads were supposedly running through the clevo centre shouting they were gonna blow the place up.
