    The Official Bundesliga Thread

Not sure if there is a Bundesliga thread (didn't see a search engine)?

Anyway, you've got to start somewhere so I thought I'd begin a portal into what is my favorite league.

It will be quite at first, especially it being the off season, but I'll try to add content from time to time, see if we can build some interest here. Wouldn't be the first time I've started from nothing so I feel confident we can establish some sort of community here.

May as well start now. Here's a few facts about the 2009-10 season that was...

    What a season...

The 47th season of Bundesliga action is done and dusted. 306 games in all, 866 goals.

Bayern München were crowned German champions for the 22nd time, and the 21st since the inauguration of the Bundesliga in 1963.

But what else of note happened in 2009-10? bundesliga.de has dug out some notable facts, figures and downright peculiarities from the season past.

    Did you know that...

...Hannover 96 became the first team to manage three own-goals in a single game? On matchday 16 they went down 5-3 at Borussia Mönchengladbach, netting five of the eight goals themselves. Defender Karim Haggui even managed to put a brace past his own keeper, Florian Fromlowitz, and Constant Djakpa chipped in with another.

...for the first time in the history of the Bundesliga, one team provided two different individual top scorers in successive seasons? VfL Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko topped the pile this time around on 22 goals, taking over the mantle from forward colleague Grafite, who bagged 28 for the Wolves when they won the title in 2008-09.

...Hertha BSC became the first top-flight team ever to go 16 home games without a win? That broke the record of another Berlin side, Tasmania, who were winless in 15 at home way back in 1965-66.

...FC Bayern scored in 23 consecutive Bundesliga matches for the first time in 31 years? The last time the record champions had a run of that magnitude was between March and December 1979, when they managed to hit their opponents' net at least once in 28 successive games.

...Bayer Leverkusen set an all-time unbeaten record, measured from the start of the season? Bayer did not lose any of their first 24 encounters (13 wins, 11 draws), before being downed 3-2 at 1. FC Nürnberg on matchday 25. They eventually finished fourth.

...Hamburger SV would have been the 2009-10 champions based solely on first-half performances? HSV's season points total for the first 45 minutes was 61, the highest in the Bundesliga. Northern rivals Werder Bremen were the "second-half champs”, amassing 68 points after the break. But it is a game of two halves.

...a Dutch coach won the Bundesliga title for the first time? Louis van Gaal accomplished the feat in his debut season at FC Bayern, something only four coaches before him had managed. For van Gaal, it was the seventh top-flight league title of his career, adding to earlier successes with Ajax (1994-96), Barcelona (1998, 1999) and AZ Alkmaar (2009).

...Hannover 96 equalled their worst-ever beating in the Bundesliga in the season just past? The 96ers went down 7-0 at Bayern München on matchday 31, the same margin of defeat they suffered on their trip to VfB Stuttgart during the 1985-86 campaign.

...for the first time in 15 years, four players from the same club have scored ten goals or more in a season? Arjen Robben (16), Thomas Müller (13), Ivica Olic (11) and Mario Gomez (10) of FC Bayern are the quartet in question. The last one-club foursome to do so were Werder Bremen's Mario Basler (20), Marco Bode (14), Andreas Herzog (10) and Vladimir Bestchastnyk (10), in 1994-95.

...1. FC Köln set a new league record away from home? The Billygoats did not concede a single goal on the road for six games in a row, between matchdays 6 and 16. No other side in the 47-year history of the Bundesliga has done that.

...Claudio Pizarro equalled a goalscoring record?
Werder Bremen's Peruvian striker scored 16 goals in the season just past, taking his Bundesliga total down the years to 133. That puts him level with former FC Bayern idol Giovane Elber, the highest-scoring foreign player ever in the Bundesliga.

...SC Freiburg established an unwelcome new best on home turf? The team from the deep south west failed to score once in six home games between matchdays 11 and 23, something no top-flight side had managed before them.

...VfL Wolfsburg were the poorest defending champions since 1984-85? The Wolves ended the season well down the table in eight place. 25 years ago, VfB Stuttgart did even worse. A year after winning the title, they finished back in 10th.

...Andreas Ivanschitz of 1. FSV Mainz 05 picked up the quickest red card on record? The Austrian midfielder lasted all of 188 seconds on matchday 29, being sent off for taking a kick at 1. FC Nürnberg's Javier Pinola. Nürnberg went on to win 2-0.

...there were more away wins than ever before in the Bundesliga in 2009-10? The visiting side picked up maximum points on 95 occasions this season, topping by two the previous best figure from 2006-07.

...Thomas Müller became the youngest Bayern München player ever to score a hattrick in the Bundesliga? Müller bagged the lot in the Munich side's 3-1 victory over VfL Bochum in the penultimate round of league fixtures on May 1st. He was 20 years and 230 days old.

...four players did not miss a single minute of Bundesliga action all season? Philipp Lahm (FC Bayern), Neven Subotic (Borussia Dortmund), Roel Brouwers (Mönchengladbach) and Manuel Neuer (Schalke) were on the pitch for their sides for all 3,060 minutes of all 34 games – plus added time! Last season, four of the five ever-presents were goalkeepers, whereas this time around only Neuer was.

    DFB Pokel Final:

    Two down, one to go

FC Bayern München completed the domestic double as they romped to a resounding 4-0 victory over Werder Bremen in the DFB Cup final.

Goals from Arjen Robben, Ivica Olic, Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger got the goals in what was ultimately a one-sided affair in the capital, particularly after Torsten Frings' second-half dismissal.

    Entertaining start

In front of a packed 72,954 crowd at the Olympiastadion, Robben was the first to test Bremen keeper Tim Wiese with just three minutes gone as his left-foot drive was beaten over the bar by the Germany World Cup hopeful.

In a fiery first quarter of an hour, Claudio Pizarro created Werder's best chance as he nutmegged Daniel van Buyten but failed to find away past Bayern keeper hans-Jörg Butt. Torsten Frings and Aaron Hunt were unable to apply the finish from the rebound.

Still, it was the Bavarians who gained the ascendancy, Robben should have done better as he missed an open goal from the edge of the box following a smart exchange on the right with Olic.

    Olic involved as ever

Olic himself then missed a sitter in the centre as he failed to get the necessary purchase on a Robben flash across the six-yard box.

However, Bayern were soon in front as Olic muscled his way into the box only to see the ball impeded by the left arm of Per Mertesacker. Referee Thorsten Kinhöfer pointed siftly to the spot, and Robben converted low to the right to send the Munich Reds in with the advantage at the break.

Bremen started the second half brightly and almost found a way through when Mesut Özil wriggled his way into the box, but Martin Demichelis held his ground to prevent the ball across for the awaiting Pizarro.

    Ribery adds number three

But again Bayern responded in clinical style when Bremen failed to clear a Robben corner, allowing the ever-present Olic to stab home for number two just seven minutes into the second period.

Thomas Müller almost added to his impressive tally this season when his finish was cleared off the line following a Ribery ball across from the left, but the two reversed roles ten minutes later as the French maestro was sent into the clear by his German club-mate, finishing coolly past the stranded Wiese.

    Historic season in the offing

Pizarro forced Butt to tip his header over shortly afterwards, but it all turned sour for Thomas Schaaf's side when Torsten Frings was dismissed for a second bookable offence after his crunching tackle on Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The German international got the sweetest of revenge with six minutes remaining, bringing down a Philipp Lahm cross superbly on the chest before poking home neatly into the far corner and rounding off another splendid evening's work for Louis van Gaal's star ensemble.

Captain Mark van Bommel lifted the trophy to the delight of the Bayern fans, who are now hoping their heroes can go on to complete an unprecedented treble by beating Inter Milan in the final of the UEFA Champions League next Saturday.

Bremen: Wiese - Fritz, Mertesacker, Naldo, Boenisch - Frings, Bargfrede (Marin 54') - Hunt (Hugo Almeida 46'), Borowski (D. Jensen 70') - Özil - Pizarro

Bayern: Butt - Lahm, van Buyten, Demichelis, Badstuber - van Bommel, Schweinsteiger - Robben (Hamit Altintop 86'), T. Müller (Tymoschchuk 77'), Ribery - Olic (Klose 80')

    Goals: 1-0 Robben (pen 35'), 0-2 Olic (52'), 0-3 Ribery (63'), 0-4 Schweinsteiger 83')

Attendance: 72,954 (sold out - Olympiastadion)

Looks as if Bayern (ugh) have a chance for the treble.

I hate you Bayern, I hate you Bayern, I hate you.

I've seen more of him on the US national team than anything and he's certainly impressed. When I first heard of him I thought, 'Gee I wonder how he got his spot, could it be his dad is the US caoch?' but then after seeing him in a number of matches I have to say he's definitely one of USA's more promising young talents.

    And thanks Amy.

Nürnberg have retained their Bundesliga status with a 3-0 aggregate over Augsburg. I don't like the introduction of a relegation play-off. I prefer three up, three down. As for Bradley, it appears that not all is well in Gladbach so he's likely on his way out. Don't know where he'd go in England. Fulham look the place for Americans to go to.

    Saw this coming:

Luca Toni and Bayern part ways

FC Bayern München and striker Luca Toni have mutually agreed to end the Italian's contract on June 30th 2010. The original agreement would have seen Toni stay until 2011.

"I would like to thank Luca Toni for his efforts, especially in 2007/08 when he played a large part in us winning the double", said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. The boardroom director of FC Bayern München added "I wish Luca Toni the best for the future at his new club."

    Bundesliga top scorer in 2007/08

The 33 year old, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 before joining Bayern in July 2007, scored 38 goals for the Bavarians in 60 games, becoming top scorer in the Bundesliga in 2007/08.

According to media reports, Toni will shortly be signing for Italian Serie A side Genova. In the season just gone, Toni was put out on loan to AS Roma.

After their great win tonight in the Champions League beating Cluj 4-0 I think Bayer Munich will now win the Bundesliga. Although they are still only in 10th place and 10 points behind the leaders Dortmund I think they will win it again. Gomez and Muller are in cracking form.

Croatian born striker Ivica Olic will be out for six months after sustaining torn ligaments and cartilage trouble in his knee.

Looking at the Bundesliga fixtures this weekend there isn't any that you can say are of a mouth-watering quality.
Dortmund should increase their points tally with, what looks like a fairly easy game at Hannover. Mainz, who have lost two of their last three games have a banana skin of a tie at Freiburg. If they fail to get anything out of this game then you must say that their bubble really has burst. Bayern Munich, who have an injury ravaged side are still improving and it appears they have the easiest match of the weekend at bottom spot Munchengladbach. An intriguing game on Friday night is Schalke v Sankt Pauli. Predict the outcome of this game if you dare. Hot & cold blowing Hamburg have a tricky game at home to Hoffenheim as do Wolfsburg at inform Eintracht Frankfurt.
Another game that will be hard to forecast is the Nuremberg & Cologne game. Both teams have improved dramatically in the last couple of weeks and putting your money on the winner is very tricky. All I seem to be talking about is hard to predict matches and on Sunday Stuttgart play host to Werder Bremen and I can't separate these two either. The last game, on paper looks like an easy game for Leverkusen at home to Kaiserslautern but be warned.

    Bundesliga results - Week 11

    Schalke 3-0 St Pauli
    Hamburg 2-1 Hoffenheim
    E. Frankfurt 3-1 Wolfsburg
    M'gladbach 3-3 B Munich
    Freiburg 1-0 Mainz
    Nuremberg 3-1 Cologne
    Hannover 0-4 B Dortmund
    Leverkusen 3-1 Kaiserslautern
    Stuttgart 6-0 W Bremen

Schalke got a handy three points with only their second win of the season and they did it in style beating St Pauli 3-0 with their big summer signing Raul scoring two goals and their other star Huntelaar getting the third. Hoffenheim took only six minutes to score in their game at Hamburg and Hamburg only got the equaliser just on half time. They left it fairly late to get the winner with Petric scoring on 83'.Eintract Frankfurt are becoming a force to be reckoned with when they beat ex-champions Wolfsburg quite easily 3-1. Bayern Munich's injury problems came to the fore when they were held to a 3-3 draw by lowly Munchengladbach. Mainz's season seems to have hit a sticky patch when they lost again, this time 1-0 to improving Freiburg. Freiburg have a really good striker in Cisse. Nuremberg had a comfortable 3-1 win over Cologne and have now jumped to 7th spot in the league.. On Sunday it brought Hannover & Borussia Dortmund together but Hannover may as well have stayed at home with Dortmund romping home 4-0 and cementing their position at the top. Kaiserslautern really are struggling of late and they came back from Leverkusen with nothing and getting a beating 3-1. Werder Bremen have been getting some very poor results lately and this one on Sunday must be one of their worst ever when a rampant Stuttgart hammered home 6 goals without reply. On that showing Stuttgart should climb the table very quickly.

The league table has really surprised me this season. I was really expecting a lot more from Schalke. Magath is a very good manager and came close last season but, this season hasn't gone as planned. He lost Kuranyi and a lot of key players like Westermann and Bordon. The team is young and will need time. Unlike you, I don't see Bayern winning the title. They need Robben. Dortmund will be tough to over come. The league is really upside down this season.

    Bundesliga Fixtures - Week 12

    Fixtures

    Borussia Dortmund - Hamburg(fri)
    Werder Bremen - Eintracht Frankfurt(sat)
    Wolfsburg - Schalke
    Cologne - Munchengladbach
    Kaiserslautern - Stuttgart
    Sankt Pauli - Leverkusen
    Mainz - Hannover
    Hoffenheim - Freiburg(sun)
    Bayern Munich - Nuremberg

We start on Friday night with a cracking game, Dortmund against Hamburg. Dortmund, who have the highest goals tally (27) and the meanest defence(7) should be able to overcome Jekyll & Hyde side Hamburg.
Saturday starts with a dis-appointing Werder Bremen against a good Eintracht Frankfurt side who should win quite comfortably. Wolfsburg, who have only one win in six look to have their work cut out if they want a result from their game with an improving Schalke. The Wolves Grafite & Dzeko just aren't performing which should give Schalke a chance to improve their points tally via Raul & Huntelaar. The two clubs holding up the rest of the league, Cologne and Munchengladbach meet each other this weekend. Both teams can really put on the style when they are in the mood as showed last week when MGB very nearly beat Bayern and Cologne beat Hamburg two weeks ago. MGB don't like playing away so I'm putting my money on Cologne. Kaiserslautern have tough game on Saturday when the play hosts to Stuttgart. Slautern have won only one game in nine and that was against bottom club MGB so I can't see anything other than an away win here. Sankt Pauli are struggling of late while their opponents Leverkusen are playing quite well, having lost only one game in nine. Mainz should get back to winning ways when they entertain free falling Hannover who have lost four of their five defeats in the last five games. The first game on Sunday is Hoffenheim - Freiburg. I hope this game is on ESPN because IMO it's the game of the weekend. Hoffenheim are playing very well and on paper should have the measure of Freiburg but Freiburg are no mugs and they will give their hosts a hard & tough game. The final game is between Bayern Munich & Nuremberg. Bayern, still injury ravaged have a banana skin of a game against a surprisingly good Nuremberg side who have won five of their seven games. I will side with Bayern but because of their depleted team don't be surprised if Nuremberg don't spring a shock result
