FA Acting Boss Quits Over Fifa Row

Acting chairman of the FA Roger Burden has said he will quit because he no longer trusts members of Fifa after the failure of England's World Cup bid.

Sky News' sport correspondent Ian Dovaston said: "He basically feels he cannot work with Fifa because he would find it difficult to work with people he cannot trust."

In a open letter, Mr Burden said: "I recognise that an important part of the role is in liason with Fifa."
He went on to explain that he would not feel comfortable working with the world footballing body.

The announcement that Mr Burden is withdrawing his candidacy for the permanent post of FA boss came after the head of England bid said there was no point in bidding again until Fifa changes its ways.

England 2018 officials said as many as six of the 22 Fifa members had promised to vote for England and in the end only one did so apart from Britain's own member Geoff Thompson.

Mr Burden said: "We were equal top of Fifa's own technical assessment of the four bids.

"We were top of an independent assessment of the best commercial bids and our
presentation on Thursday was widely acclaimed as the best of the 2018 and 2022 bids.

"Against this background, I am struggling to understand how we only achieved two votes. It is difficult to believe that the voting was an objective process.

"On top of that, Prince William, the Prime Minister and other members of our delegation were promised votes that did not materialise."

Andy Anson, who led England's attempt to become host nation of the World Cup in 2018, said the voting system needs to be overhauled.

But he stopped short of blaming the British media, despite claiming that Fifa delegates had told him the news reports on corruption had "killed" the bid.

Mr Burden, who was appointed in May, will continue as acting chairman for the time being until a successor is appointed.

I agree with what he has "apparently quoted".

But to me it sounds dodgy that we were promised votes!!! I though the votes were all secret?

I agree. They should scrap the voting system. That way it will be corruption free, politically free and based solely on football (hopefully.)

That eliminates pretty much every way they can manipulate the choice for their benefit. Why would they ever consider that?

Blatter's getting along, so it shouldn't matter.

They are all in their 70's / 80's i've heard, so they won't even see the 2018 or 2022 world cup "hopefully".

His increased pension should serve him well up until then.
