    England at Wembley?

Joey Barton recently had this to say:

Joey Barton has condemned the England team as an "elitist, southern-based club" that most people in the country no longer connect to..

Asked whether he might be picked by Fabio Capello, Barton said: "No … I'm not bleating about it, at the end of the day I'm playing for QPR, I'm playing in the Premier League, you know, I'm far from hard done by, but it would have been nice to play for England.

"I've played well enough over the last 18 months for them to select me, he's [Capello's] chosen not to, so for me I'm planning on going away and playing golf and watching the [European] Championships on TV, and no doubt being massively let down by an England side coming home quite early."

He added: "I mean, my massive issue with England, or Team England as it's now known, is it is now an elitist, southern-based team
I agree I preferred it when England constantly rotated and were visting the likes of Old Trafford, St James', Anfield, can't remember if they went to Villa Park much? The Emirates would be good nowadays. Wembley doesn't have the same aura as it once did, and having been a few times, the atmosphere is very dry and the pitch has had its controversy. But...it's here to stay.

I also have to agree that he was good enough to play. He'd give the bite to the midfield that England miss, and is much better technically than Gareth 'zzzzz' Barry.

Ahh right, yeah well who cares, i'd rather watch them on the TV as I usually turn off after 20 min, would hate to go to Wembley and stay the whole match!! Poor southerners! In their over-priced seats, leaving their over-priced houses empty

Yeah, that's pretty much everyones attitude now anyway. Though, for the hardcore nationalists up in Carlisle or for the odd person wanting to see Xaviesta on 12th november it must be frustrating!

Yeah, I remember when they used to go around grounds, and it was good, gave people the chance to see the team when usually they maybe couldn't afford the train/bus/car to Wembley, its not cheap!!! They played at the Riverside once but I was working so didn't go, I definately would have gone, If they were ever to go to the Riverside again I would try to go.

I don't see any problem with how we have it. The national team should play at the national stadium, which should be in the capital city. It's just a bit unfortunate that in England this is in the south of the country. However in France, theirs I think is in the north.

Playing for England and playing at the national stadium lost its magical effect years back, when being chosen to represent your country stopped being considered an honour and a proud moment. Players' attitudes on this front have effected their performances, which in turn have led to fans losing interest. In my opinion unless this is put back to the way it should be, England will never win a major tournament.

Well living now in Andover for 7 yrs or so I've never been tempted to go and watch England at Wembley, it's still a nightmare to get to, parking is either very expensive or non-existent, OK you can use the tube... but at night... sorry no thanks. plus the area around it is still a dump, they've done the stadium up, but the neighbourhood isn't shall we say the best in London. Plus getting away from there... don't get me started, went to the Charity Shield, took me 3 hrs, because the Police insisted on sending me north up the Bloody M1, I tried to tell them I lived in Andover, stoopid plods.

Yeah the police do go over the top sometimes!! Even if for just one year they spread out the games around the country. We know why they won't as the cost of the stadium was a joke and they need to justify its cost and try to pay it off!! Oh well, its only shitty England.
