i totally agree with you, the football clubs merely provide a standard to rally behind. its a shame too, since both are such fantastic clubs with great history and tradition.

The annoying thing is, the politicians use the clubs as a scapegoat. I will openly admit i have no love for celtic,But i also know the majority of there fans, tho catholic are only interested in the football. I will also admit (celtic fans take note here)That rangers have a very small minority of idiots who let the club down. Tho the mhedia is very imbalanced in there outlook to both clubs,Seriously i dont give afeck, I know how i come across on here,But that is simply because the celtic fannys are so easy to wind up. Personally i have no problem at all with catholics, tho i admit, i dont like the misguided beliefs they follow. Never blame the individual. No, it wouldn't disappear. It's too ingrained in our society. We are big footie people here and if the Old firm disappeared then two new teams along broadly similar lines would sprout up and its game on again. Both have their lunatic fringe. And both clubs try to deal as best they can with that fringe. But it goes much further than an old firm game.

Pretty much, but it is very much watered down. More a local rivalry. But when we go through to Edinburgh you feel a hell of a lot more hated at swinecastle than Easter road although the hibees hate us too.

There was a recent poll which found that 11% of Scots think sectarianism is fine, 15% don't think it should be a criminal offence, that's 780,000 people.

i do however disagree with your point that rangers have a "very small minority" of idiots. Last seasons CIS cup final was blighted by the overwhelming majority of rangers fans indulging in sectarian songs ... the same with celtic there seems to be an increase on fans indulging in chants about the provos

its starting to look like there's nothing we can do about sectarianism, i think this is partly down to the fact it's been swept under the carpet for so long in this country. without the old firm the sectarianism would definately still be there, maybe if they done something about marches on both sides, especially the orange walks it would just eradicate the type of vermin that feed off of sectarianism in this country

so i think you have a point Haggis...Scottish football, all of it, is dying on its ass, and the only way it will become competitive again is with major investment. i just cant see that happening unfortunately, but id also hate to see the SPL become just a glorified pub league...too many great historic clubs for that too happen.

Those stats are wank, you can suddenly say 11% is 780,000 people, how many people did the poll ask, 100? So that's 11 people? Polls are done to get the outcome they want. It is definitely a problem and it wouldn't go away, but it would help calm it down.
