The Decline Of Once Premiership Clubs

Was looking at the tables on SSN earlier and thinking fookin hell, wasnt long ago you were in the Premiership. The likes of Charlton, Sheffield United & Wednesday in L1 - Then Bradford City in L2, football is a funny old game.

On a side note though what a great job Chris Powell is doing at Charlton?.

I always thought Sheffield Wednesday were a potential big club and they were premier league regulars. Possibly around the same size as Aston Villa perhaps. But relegation happens, revenues fall, mis-management etc kick in and it can be hard to come back.

I think some, if not all of those clubs overspent to stay in the Premier League. As a result of that they are now finding it hard and probably will for a few years yet. Totally agree about the job Chris Powell has done at Charlton Athletic though.

To me they're a big club yes, not saying this because im a Villa fan and dont mean to sound biased, but IMO there is a gap between the two clubs, i aint gonna go right into it but its pretty clear to see, Wednesday are a big club though no doubt. I still feel their problems all started when they took on Carbone & Di Canio, both were luxery players that they couldnt afford and it crippled them from there. Jonk was another player who was earning a nice wage, but i still cant understand why they were paying Booth £45k a week, in 2000 that was a big wage.

It's sad seeing the traditional Premier League clubs suffering. When I think of great top flight grounds, Hillsbrough, Elland Road, Pride Park and the City Ground all come to mind. It's great to see Norwich back and doing so well though. Leeds and Forest will be back soon hopefully. Wednesday it will obviously take a lot of hard work, and best wishes to them.

thats the one that really sticks out in my mind. Leeds too to be fair, they've spent most of their existence in the top flight.
