The one I've always been told is it's the day when in olden times people put gifts they didn't want into boxes and give them to the needy people, hence boxing day.
I'm going out later watching United in the pub.

i just plan on sitting around watching football. what about you lot?
also i have a few Boxing day questions (we never really observed it in my house)...what the hell is it all about? like history, customs, etc... id really like to know cause as i said, we never really gave it a second thought in my house, besides simply calling the day after Christmas "Boxing day". that and Boxing day isnt observed here in the U.S.
also why is it the busiest shopping day over there? surely a day BEFORE Christmas would make more sense? or is it called Boxing day because you put all the shit you got for Christmas that you dont want into boxes and take it back?
anyway, Happy Boxing Day (if thats appropriate, i have no idea).

Now it is Football and nothing else as, oh and getting smashed!Boxing Day is traditionally a day following Christmas when wealthy people and homeowners in the United Kingdom would give a box containing a gift to their servants. Nowadays Boxing Day is better known as a bank or public holiday that occurs on December 26, or the first or second weekday after Christmas Day, depending on national or regional laws. It is observed in Great Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and some other Commonwealth nations.
