BORO could put potential promotion before guaranteed profit in January, Tony Mowbray today revealed.
The club are are minded to gamble on risking a vital asset leaving for free in the summer rather than accept a fee in January and, in a worse case scenario, missing out on promotion.
Players entering the last six months of their current deals with Boro include skipper Matthew Bates and Tony McMahon while Rhys Williams' contract in the summer of 2013.
Both Williams and Bates could command seven figure fees next month, but their departure could severely harm Boro's chances of reaping a Premier League cash bonanza at the end of the season.
While stopping short of slapping a 'not for sale at any price' label on the pair, Mowbray did say the club's healthy position in the table makes it much less likely that they'll sell.
"I think we can look at how far we can go this season and where we may end up," he said, "even at the expense of losing a player for nothing potentially.
