Connor Goldson Rangers exit 'acceptance' theory floated as Kris Commons claims Ibrox star's decision made

Another ex-Septic blowing air?

The 29-year old has been a stalwart for Light Blues but his contract is running out in a matter of weeks

Connor Goldson has already made his mind up regarding his Rangers future, according for Kris Commons.

The 29-year old has been an almost ever-present figure since his arrival under Steven Gerrard in 2018, and looks set to break the 60-appearance barrier yet again this season.

However, his contract is up at the end of the campaign and there's no sign - yet, at least - that there's a new deal in the pipeline.

Despite helping lead Rangers to the Europa League final and sampling some incredible atmospheres at Ibrox, not least against RB Leipzig on Thursday, former Celtic man Commons reckons Goldson's decision is already made and not even the pull of Champions League football next season will change that.

Commons wrote in the Daily Mail: "It's all gone quiet with regards to his future and I strongly suspect there's now an acceptance that he will be moving on as a free agent in the summer.

"The fact that he has allowed his contract to run down this far into the season tells me one thing he's almost certainly got something sorted elsewhere.

"Some people might think the incentive of Champions League football would convince him to stay, but I disagree.

"It looks to me like his mind is already made up.

"It's a financial decision more than anything else. Goldson is now 29 years old. He probably feels like he has one big contract left in him.

"He could move down south to a decent Championship club, double his wages, and secure his family's future if he gets a three or four-year deal.

"You can't hold that against him because he has been a terrific servant to Rangers from the moment he walked through the door in 2018. He's now coming towards the end of his fourth season at Ibrox and he has played over 50 games in every campaign.

"He barely misses a match. He's a league title winner who helped stop Celtic getting ten-in-a-row and has also now reached a European final with Rangers.

"He might well feel he has achieved all he can at Ibrox. Certainly, if Rangers can beat Eintracht Frankfurt to win the Europa League, that would be the perfect farewell for Goldson.

"Doing so and securing Champions League football for next season might tempt a younger player, or someone with a couple of years left on their deal, to stay and have a crack at it for one more season.

"But Goldson is in a different position. He's now coming to his peak and his next contract will be far and away the biggest of his career. The reality is that there's just no way Rangers will be able to match the wages that some clubs down south will offer. Even in the Championship.

"I just wonder, though, what he made of the atmosphere and the euphoric scenes after the game against RB Leipzig last Thursday night.

"I've spoken to a few of my Rangers friends who were at the game and they told me the atmosphere was absolutely off the charts. It was the loudest they'd ever heard Ibrox.

"Wherever he goes and whatever he goes on to achieve in the game, nothing will ever come close to replicating that.

"That's what Goldson will be leaving behind to go and play in stadiums half the size of Ibrox every other week, albeit for a lot more money."

Goldson has been part of the furniture at Ibrox since his £3 million switch from Brighton almost four years ago.

Despite being one of the Light Blues' central players, Commons is convinced Rangers will have enough to make up for his departure if it happens.

He added: "From Rangers' point of view as a club, I wouldn't necessarily lose any sleep over him leaving. He's been a good player, but he's not irreplaceable.

"You've got Calvin Bassey already at the club, a young player who has stepped up massively over these past few months.

"He's a really big, powerful boy who has grown into the role at centre-back since moving from left-back a few months ago. He can lead the Rangers defence as and when Goldson departs.

"You've also got John Souttar arriving at the club in the summer, a Scotland international with good pedigree who has impressed this season with Hearts when fit.

"Leon King looks to be an excellent academy prospect and should be involved more as a squad player next term.

"You also have Niko Katic to come back to Ibrox from his loan spell with Hajduk Split. He's someone Rangers shouldn't have let go in the first place.

"So there are plenty of candidates to step in and replace Goldson when the time comes. The only disappointing thing from the club's point of view is losing him on a free transfer."

No unfortunately not this time but he is speaking about something Rangers fans in the main knew. One thing may keep him at Rangers is winning the Europa league. His wife is also homesick which doesn’t help. We just have to wait and see

Overall Goldson has done well for us....last season he was immense but this season he has been poor in comparison...just got the feeling that his mind was elsewhere. If he wants to go then fine but it is this state of limbo that the fans, certainly me, don't like. I've said on a few occasions this season that a new centre back pairing is required si I'm no gonna be hypocritical now and say he must stay. I wish him well if he moves on.
