NFL Draft: Excellent News for the Talented Athlete

Sporting activities have always been a way of keeping the body agile, active and fit. It becomes more interesting when there's a touch of professionalism about it and a regulatory body in place tasked with maintaining and advancing the every aspect of the game.

In today’s world, sports now play a huge part in people’s daily lives. Thus, whether as professional athletes, regulators, administrators, sponsors or just an observer (fans as they are called), everyone is part of the game.

However, beyond the thrill and the excitement that sporting activities elicit from us, it has its other benefits that further drives the interest in it, especially for the athlete. These benefits can be summed up as financial benefits, career benefits, and educational benefits.

In no sports is this more evident than in the sport widely regarded beyond the shores of the United States of America as American Football.

What is American Football?

It basically is a team sports, played with a ball that has pointed ends. In this sport, players are divided into 2 teams of 11 people each, with a quarterback for every team who will pass the ball to the opposite players at the beginning of every play.

Each team gets four (4) tries to maneuver the ball a minimum of 10 yards, otherwise the alternative team gets the ball back. The whole idea is to try and get the ball to the end zone of the opposing team and upon achieving this, a point is scored.

However, this is not the only way to score points in the game as there are other ways of doing this. You can read more about the game here

The National Football League (NFL)

This is an American sports league consisting of 32 teams, equally divided between the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The league is 17 week competition during which the 32 teams compete for supremacy.

At the end of the season, six teams will advance to the playoffs from which the winners will lock horns in the highly prestigious play-offs where the ultimate winner for the season will be declared.

The National League Draft

This is an annual event during which player recruitment takes place. It is the league's most typical source of player recruitment. The whole procedure is complete when each team has been able to select a player or when it is able to trade its position within the draft.

Here, the thirty-two (32) teams are able to make one pick in each round of which there are seven (7). There’s also an option for compensatory picks sanctioned by the management body where up to 32 compensatory picks can be made from the third to the seventh rounds.

All the picks made can however be traded. You can learn more at: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/how-does-the-nfl-draft-work-rules-rounds-eligibility-and-more/o431yshp0l431e7543pcrzpg1.

Player Eligibility

As the number one sports in the country, with a dedicated following that is passionate, it stands to reason that the competition to get drafted to join this elite group of athletes is also huge. This poses a challenge for any one hoping to be drafted and thus, the question is, how does such a person become eligible?

For new players to be eligible for a draft into the National league, they need to have been out of high school for a minimum period of three years. Thus, if the person was in college, that would mean that the individual involved is either in their sophomore years or is a junior in the team.

They should also have used up their college eligibility prior to the start of the next college football season. This is because, players can only be eligible for the draft when their college eligibility ends.

Seeing that the competition for a place in a team is high, what should an aspiring football player do to stay relevant and thus, increase the chances of getting picked by a team?

Here are a few tips

  • Be a part of your high school team or join a club team, this will give you some experience and some necessary exposure.
  • Try to be part of a university football camp. By so doing, you get valuable exposure and more importantly, you get noticed by a team.
  • Create a video compilation of your best game moments, your skills etc. This way, you are indirectly creating your own resume.
  • Get registered with the NCAA eligibility center so that your status as an amateur athlete will be validated.
  • When in college and if for any reason you didn’t receive an offer while in high school, become a walk on. Also, even if you don’t get into college, keep working hard, you might still get a shot.
  • Even after you have received an offer and have joined a college team, train hard. As a matter of fact, train every day. Create a training schedule for yourself, work to improve your strength and the various aspects of your game.
  • Ensure you play college football for some years before you apply for the draft. This way, you are very prepared for the big stage

Finally, ensure that you keep abreast of the best NFL draft news. This is so as to be in the know about any new development(s) that there might be, which could help inform your decision making and planning.

Sports continues to be one of the most exciting aspects of modern life. With the huge followership that American football commands comes great sources of revenue that keeps getting reinvested in the sport.

Make no mistake about it, being called up to the league is always a life changing moment in the life of the athlete. Oh the joy of those who get drafted!
