I think Martyn Dick has it right:- 'and' becoming 'n' and then 'on'.
The same way that "could/should have" became "could/should've" and was then bastardised to "could/should of".

Common usage is the curse of the English language in that if enough people get something wrong it becomes acceptable!
Like 'different to' and 'different than'!

To be perfectly honest my dad was a butcher to trade and always said a roll n sausage I have said it as long as Ican remember. Yes it was and but language and it’s use changes by the minute so a roll n square is fine by me
